Sigma Tau Delta, Omicron Zeta Chapter

Membership Information

A member of the Association of College Honor Societies, Sigma Tau Delta is composed of over 560 chapters located throughout the United States, Europe, Canada, and the Caribbean.  Sigma Tau Delta's central purpose is to confer distinction upon outstanding students of the English language and literature in undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies. Sigma Tau Delta also recognizes the accomplishments of professional writers who have contributed to the fields of language and literature.

Membership in Sigma Tau Delta is by invitation, extended through a local chapter on behalf of the international organization.  Students who meet the qualifications for membership must apply through the chapter on their campus. Once a student contacts the local chapter, the sponsor will check the qualifications and recommend that student for membership.

There are two categories of membership: active and associate. Active membership is available, in general, to students with a minimum of a B or equivalent average in English, who rank at least in the highest thirty-five percent of their class in general scholarship, and who have completed at least three semesters or five quarters of college work. (Local chapters may raise, but not lower, these criteria.) Full-time faculty members who sponsor a chapter are also eligible.

Associate membership is available to currently enrolled students, undergraduate or graduate, who have the requisite academic background but who are not majoring or minoring in English. In addition, non-sponsoring faculty members with a degree in English may be associate members.

Membership in Sigma Tau Delta is an outward recognition of personal accomplishment. It provides opportunities for those interested in English language and literature to join with like-minded persons on the local, regional, national, and international levels and to participate in and present professional work at conferences and conventions at these levels. Members receive the Newsletter while they remain active in their local chapters. They also receive and have the opportunity to contribute to the award-winning literary publication, The Rectangle, and are eligible to compete for several $1,000-$2,500 scholarships and awards. There are also internship and graduate assistantship opportunities available for members.

In 1957, the Omicron Zeta Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta was organized at the Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University.  The purpose of the chapter is to encourage advanced study in English literature and to honor outstanding students in the field by election to membership.

There are two ways for Brooklyn Campus English majors to become eligible for full membership:

  • Option One:  Student must complete six advanced credits (100-level or above) in English at the Brooklyn Campus.  Credits earned at another institution do not count.  Student must have a 3.0 average in English and an overall average of 2.75.

  • Option Two:  Student must complete the English core (ENG 16 and two sophomore literature survey courses) at the Brooklyn Campus.  If any part of the English core has been satisfied by transfer credits, student can only become eligible under Option One.  Student must have a 3.5 average in English and a 3.0 overall average.

Associate membership is open to non-English majors who meet either of the following sets of requirements:

  • Option One:  Student must complete six advanced credits in English at the Brooklyn Campus.  Same restrictions as outlined above.  Student must have a 3.0 average in English and a 2.75 overall average.

  • Option Two:  Student must complete six credits in English at the Brooklyn Campus.  Same restrictions as outlined above.  Student must have a 4.0 average in English and a 2.75 overall average.
