Transfer Credits

There are two ways to transfer credits from another institution to LIU.

1)  If you are a transfer student, you may be able to transfer credits earned at another institution to the Brooklyn Campus.  When you meet with your Admissions Counselor, you will receive a Record of Transfer Credit, which lists all credits on your transcript from your previous school(s).  Upon evaluation of that transcript, the Admissions Office may grant credit for some Brooklyn Campus courses.  Other credits on your transcript may be evaluated as "NE," which means Not Equivalent.  This simply means that based on the limited information appearing on your transcript, the Admissions Counselor is unable to make a determination as to whether those courses are equivalent to any particular Brooklyn Campus courses. "NE-SAT CORE" means the course satisfies a Brooklyn Campus Core requirement in the respective subject area ("NE-SAT CORES" means it satisfies both of two, as in the case, for example, where two history courses are required), but no matter what, if you are an English major, you must take the required core-level courses in English (six credits from among English 61, English 62, English 63, at English 64) at the Brooklyn Campus.

If you have any other transfer credits marked "NE" on your Record of Transfer Credit, you should go to the respective department, set up an appointment with the Department Chair, and request that he/she evaluate the credits for transfer.  Be sure to take with you a copy of the course description from your previous institution's catalog and, if possible, a copy of the course syllabus.  If the Department Chair approves your request, he/she will need to write a memo to the appropriate Dean requesting that the transfer credits be accepted in lieu of particular Brooklyn Campus courses.  The Dean, not the Department Chair, grants this permission and forwards a copy of the memo with his/her signature to the Registrar.  Make sure you get a copy of the signed memo to keep, and give a copy to your advisor.

2)  Matriculated students at the Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University may also take courses at another institution and have credits transferred to the Brooklyn Campus under the following conditions.

  • The other institution must be a four-year accredited institution (two-year community colleges are unacceptable.).

  • The institution must not be within a fifty-mile radius of the Brooklyn Campus (except as noted).

  • Students may be permitted to take specialized courses not offered at the Brooklyn Campus (e.g., Japanese, a course in Graham dance technique, Medieval stained glass windows).

  • Students are not permitted to take courses at another institution that are offered at the Brooklyn Campus during the term requested or that will be offered during the student's expected matriculation at the Brooklyn Campus.

  • Students must file an Application to Take Courses at Another Institution (available in the Dean's Office, M306) with the Registrar.  Students must have the relevant Department Chair verify the Brooklyn Campus equivalency and sign the form.  The Dean must then grant permission.

  • Only credits for courses in which you earned C or better may be transferred back to the Brooklyn Campus.
