REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ANTHROPOLOGY MAJOR:
(the same as for Soc with some additional suggestions)
1. 128 credits to graduate; 48 of these credits MUST BE over 100
level.
2. 30 credits in our department including 6 credits at the introductory
level: Soc 3 and Anth 4 or 5. Anthropology majors are encouraged
to take both Anth 4, Physical Anthropology and Archaeology, and
Anth 5, Cultural Anthropology in addition to Soc 3. The rest of
your credits in the department will be upper level courses (over
100).
3. All anthropology majors must take SOC 111, ANT 117 ,
and ANT137. These are the nuts and bolts methods courses that get
into how social scientists do research an interpret the results
of that work. They are the backbone of the major.
4. All Social Science majors must take 200 level course in their senior year. Each of these interdisciplinary senior
"capstone" courses
focuses on a unique topic and enables students
to do advanced level social science work before they leave the
university.
5. SPECIAL FOR ANTHROPOLOGY MAJORS: we would like to encourage
all anthropology majors to undertake an individual research project
as Independent Study (ANT 197 or 198) with one of the anthropology
faculty. This must be arranged on a one-to-one basis in advance.
You might want to expand on a project you start in one of your
anthropology classes. This is your chance to gather and write
about some original data about people and cultures which interest
you.
