Graduate Program

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers several fellowship opportunities to students seeking a Master's Degree in Chemistry.  Detailed below are the specific details concerning Departmental Teaching Assistantships and Federally funded Research Assistantships.

Teaching Assistantships

     Long Island University funds teaching assistantships to qualified students for the purpose of helping them pursue their career goals.  These positions are awarded by the department and are held for the duration of a students graduate studies at LIU, conditional upon maintaining a 3.00 GPA

Benefits:

  • Full tuition remission
  • A monthly stipend whose value totals $9,000/yr.
As a Teaching Assistant, the student gains valuable leadership experience by overseeing the work of students in the teaching laboratories.  TA's are given full responsibility for the running of the lab and the grading of lab reports.  In return, they gain valuable "people skills" which will help them in their future careers!

Requirements:

Applicants must meet the admissions requirements of the graduate program in order to be eligible for a Teaching Assistantship.

Research Assistantships

Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement
Come to LIU and RISE to New Heights!
The RISE program provides research opportunities and monetary support to both undergraduate and graduate students from historically under-represented minorities who wish to pursue careers in biomedical research.  Specialized training and course work is designed to help prepare students for performing two full years of research.  During the academic year, the student performs research under the expert guidance of the LIU faculty member of his or her choice.  During the summer months, the student will be sponsored to perform extra-mural research at a leading biomedical institution.  Students are also given extensive preparation for the Graduate Record Exam, and will gain valuable experience in preparing material for publication and in making public presentations of their results.

Benefits include:

Graduate students
  • Full tuition remission.
  • A twelve month stipend totaling $15,000 per year
Undergraduates
  • Academic scholarships from $5,000 - $10,000 annually in tuition, depending upon grades.
  • A stipend starting at $9,000 per year for freshman and rising to $11,000 per year by your senior year.
Requirements:

All applicants must be a member of a historically under-represented minority, as defined by sections 301 and 405 of the Public Health Service Act.  Also, applicants must have a genuine interest in pursing a Ph.D. in a biomedical field of study.  Undergraduate applicants must possess an SAT score of 1100 or higher and have a high school average of 85 or better (GPA of 3.00 or above for transfers)Graduate applicants must hold a bachelors degree in either a chemical or biological discipline and possess and undergraduate GPA of 3.00 or better.

Bridges to the Doctoral Degree
In conjunction with Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University
(Graduate Students Only)
The Chemistry, Biology, and Molecular Biology Departments at Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus have established a program to help minority students gain admittance to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM) in nearby Bronx, NY, to pursue Ph.D. programs in the biomedical sciences.  In collaboration with a mentoring laboratory at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, students will also pursue research at Long Island University, Brooklyn in one of several areas, gaining valuable research experience in a nurturing environment with a high faculty-to-student ratio. Tutoring will be available from full-time faculty and student progress will be closely monitored.  Like all graduate students at Albert Einstein, they are guaranteed a full scholarship on admission. The scholarship will cover all tuition costs and a monthly stipend during their training at Albert Einstein.

    • graduate courses designed to satisfy the dual requirements of an LIU M.S. degree and the admissions requirements for the Ph.D. programs at Albert Einstein.
