CODE OF CONDUCT

Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders

All students, faculty, administrators and administrative support staff will, at all times, behave in a way that is respectful of the individual peer, faculty member, client, administrator, and administrative support person encountered. Furthermore, all students, faculty, administrators, and administrative support will behave in a way that is respectful of the diversity inherent in any group of individuals. Specific behavioral guidelines are as follows:

In class
Students are entitled to:

  • A course syllabus specifying course requirements, grading system, and schedule of assignments
  • The instructor's attendance according to schedule
  • The instructor's availability at regularly scheduled office hours to discuss issues or resolve problems
  • Evaluation of performance according to guidelines established in the syllabus
  • Participation in a written evaluation of the instructor's performance at the end of the semester

Students will:

  • Attend all classes
  • In cases of emergency, inform the professor of absence in advance of class
  • Adhere to the University calendar, making no plans for vacations or other absences when there is a conflict between the individual's work calendar and the University calendar
  • Attend to the professor and fellow students when speaking
  • Complete projects according to schedule established by the professor
  • Follow-up on any missing notes or changes in schedule with fellow classmates
  • Be sensitive to the use of non-verbal communication (gestures, facial expressions, etc.)
  • Show respect for an individual's language, culture, disability, individual difference, etc.

Students will not:

  • Talk to classmates during the professor's lecture
  • Ask questions, comment, and otherwise interact with the professor within a time frame and in a manner that is not respectful of classmates
  • Enter classes late or leave classes early without prior permission of the instructor
  • Request incompletes (except in the case of documentable emergencies)
  • Receive any pages or phone calls during class. Pagers and cellular phone will be turned off during class

In the Department
Students are entitled to:

  • Courteous treatment by secretarial and instructional staff
  • Faculty availability according to scheduled office hours

Students will:

  • Make appointments to see advisors and professors
  • Keep all appointments, or advise professor/advisor in advance if unable to make scheduled appointment
  • Speak to secretaries in a courteous manner
  • Speak to professors and advisors in a courteous and respectful manner
  • Check individual mailboxes (hanging files) regularly for important notices, readings or returned work from professors

Students will not:

  • Walk into a professor's office unannounced
  • Enter the space behind the secretarial counterspace without the permission of the program secretary
  • Speak to any individual in an aggressive, curt, disparaging or otherwise discourteous manner

During Student Teaching
Students are entitled to:

  • Explanation of performance expectations and evaluation format at the beginning of the student teaching placement.
  • Performance evaluation according to established format.

Students will:

  • Dress appropriately and uphold all dress codes set both by their practicum sites and the CSD program.
  • Keep all appointments, or advise the supervisor and seminar instructor in advance if unable to make a scheduled appointment
  • Speak to all faculty/staff in a courteous manner
  • Clean-up after client session and after self
  • Follow-up on weekly student teaching responsibilities (e.g., writing lesson plans, keeping students' attendance, writing progress notes)

Students will not:

  • Speak to any individual in an aggressive, curt, disparaging or otherwise discourteous manner
  • Leave materials, food or drink around

In case of problems with professors, advisors, administrators or support staff
Students are entitled to:

  • Address the problem according to established procedures

Students will:

  • Make an appointment with the individual in question to attempt to resolve the problem
  • If dissatisfied with the results of the meeting, make an appointment with the Chairperson to discuss the problem
  • If the problem is with the Chairperson, make an appointment with the Academic Standing Committee
  • If the problem remains unresolved, make an appointment with the Dean

Students will not:

  • Speak to the individual in question in an aggressive, curt, disparaging or otherwise discourteous manner
  • Demand to speak to the individual in question "on the spot," without an appointment
  • Complain to other faculty members, administrators, support staff, etc., in a sequence or manner outside of formal procedures established for resolution of problems

Consequences of Misconduct
Any transgression of the Code of Conduct set forth above will be viewed as professional misconduct, in accordance with departmental standards, and professional standards of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Alleged misconduct will be reported, in writing, to the Committee on Professional & Ethical Standards of the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders. This committee will investigate and make appropriate recommendations. These may range from dismissal of allegations as unsupported to dismissal of the student from the Program on grounds of misconduct.

 


A Departmental Task Force composed of faculty and students developed this Code of Conduct for the Downtown Brooklyn Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic at LIU. This Code will also apply to all behaviors within and outside the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.
