Advisement & Mentoring for English Majors

The English Department is committed to providing English majors with the best possible academic and professional guidance as they complete their degrees and contemplate life beyond graduation. To that end, the Department offers a strong program of advisement and mentoring.

If you are an English major, you have both (1) a Registration Advisor and (2) an Academic Mentor.

The following is an explanation of what these two very important people can do for you.

Your Registration Advisor

You must go to the Academic Advisement Center for advisement until you have completed 24 credits. After that, you will come to the English Department for advisement.

Effective September 2007, Wayne Berninger is the REGISTRATION ADVISOR for all English majors. He will help you keep track of the requirements for your degree, and he can answer any questions you have about requirements and registration. You must meet with Wayne Berninger during Program Guidance each semester to register for classes, even if you have another advisor elsewhere (e.g., if you are in Honors or if English is your second major). When the time comes, he will help you make sure your Application for Graduation is in order.

Program Guidance for the Spring semester is usually in November.  Program Guidance for the Summer and Fall semesters is usually in April.  Consult the Academic Calendar for specific dates and mark your calendar.

Watch the English Department blog (The Longest Island) for announcements concerning the next Program Guidance period.

Prepare for Program Guidance and Registration as follows

  1. In the weeks prior to the Program Advisement period, download a copy of the Advisement Sheet for your concentration (Literature, Creative Writing, or Writing & Rhetoric), and compare it to your transcript. What courses do you still need in order to fulfill specific requirements?

  2. Consult the on-line Course Schedule. Which courses that you need are being offered in the upcoming semester?

  3. Visit the Undergraduate Course Descriptions page on the English Department website. Here you can read descriptions of the upper-division English courses being offered in the upcoming semester. You can also pick up a paper version of this document at the front desk in the English Department or from the document holder on Wayne Berninger's office door (H 454).  Which courses are required for your concentration, and which can you take as English electives? Discuss your options with your Academic Mentor.

  4. Sketch out a tentative schedule for yourself, based on what you need to take and what is being offered. It's a good idea to have back-up courses in mind, in case one or more of the courses you want is already closed by the time you come to register.

  5. Make an appointment to discuss your tentative schedule with Wayne Berninger. He can confirm that you are taking the right courses, check to see that your desired sections are still open, and sign your registration card.  Do all of this as early as possible so you are not closed out of any courses you want or need.

Your Academic Mentor

As a major in English, you also have an ACADEMIC MENTOR. This full-time, tenure-track English Department faculty member will advise you about all aspects of your academic career other than registration. You can go to your Academic Mentor at any time for advice about a variety of academic matters, from choosing electives with an eye toward career preparation, to selecting a second major or an appropriate minor, to making a decision about graduate school and career goals. As always, you may seek advice on an informal basis from any member of the English Department faculty, but please meet with your assigned Academic Mentor at least once per semester to discuss your progress in the major and your plans for the future. Keep your Academic Mentor informed about how you are doing in your studies so that he or she can provide you with the best academic advice possible.

You will find your Academic Mentor's name on the list below. If you recently became an English major, and your name does not appear on this list, or if you recently changed your concentration and/or mentor, but it's wrong here, it simply means that this Web page hasn't been updated yet. In that situation, check the paper list that is posted on the bulletin board outside Wayne Berninger's office (H 454). It is always up-to-date.

If your concentration is listed incorrectly, please let Wayne Berninger know. If it says “unconfirmed," meet with your Academic Mentor to discuss your options and select a concentration. Afterward, don't forget to let Wayne Berninger know what you decided.

In the chart below, click on your Academic Mentor's name for contact information and office hours.
