Edward Edelman and Susanne Popper-Edelman English Essay Prizes

The English Department gives these prizes for outstanding essays written in undergraduate English courses.

Established in 1999, the prizes were at first simply called the English Essay Prizes, but in May 2002, they were renamed in remembrance of Professor Susanne Popper-Edelman, for her many years of dedication to the English Department and to the teaching of Brooklyn Campus students. In December 2002, the prizes were again renamed also to honor her husband, Professor Edward Edelman.

The Department awards the prizes at the end of each spring semester for essays written during the previous academic year (i.e., the current spring semester and the previous fall semester and summer sessions). All essays must be typed and free of written comments or grades. The name of the student and his/her instructor should be on the cover sheet but not on the essay itself. A student may not submit more than one essay in each category.  A student may submit to more than one category, but each student can win only one prize.

Watch the English Department blog (The Longest Island) for the next call for entries and the announcement of this year's winners.

For further submission guidelines, contact Maria McGarrity.
