Since 1992, I have been teaching 19th century British literature and Black literature. Courses taught have included the Survey of European Literature, Survey of Nonwestern Literature, Freshmen Honors English, West Indians in the Harlem Renaissance, Italian American Culture and History, African American Short Fiction, Romantic Literature, and 19th Century British Horror Fiction.

While I have been at LIU, I have been on numerous Departmental committees including the ARPT (of the English, Philosophy, and Foreign Language Departments), hiring committees for 18th century British literature and 19th century British literature, and the Graduate Committee. I have also been on the campus-wide Library Committee, the Graduate Committee, the Diaspora Day Committee, the Curriculum Committee, and the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program Committee.

My main service to the University has been as coordinator of the Voices of the Rainbow series, which has been running for 12 years and has presented over 100 free readings. The series, celebrating diversity and the oral tradition, has been attended by several thousand students and outside guests. Speakers have included Yevgeny Yevtushenko, Gwendolyn Brooks, Dorothy Allison, Chang-Rae Lee, Ha Jin, Gloria Naylor, Edwidge Danticat, and Ishmael Reed.
