Louis Parascandola
Academic History
Louis Parascandola holds a B.A. in English from Brooklyn
College, an M.A. in English from Long Island University, Brooklyn,
an M.S. in Library Science from Pratt Institute, and a Ph.D.
in English from the CUNY Graduate Center.
Since 1992, I have been teaching 19th century British literature
and Black literature. Courses taught have included the Survey
of European Literature, Survey of Nonwestern Literature, Freshmen
Honors English, West Indians in the Harlem Renaissance, Italian
American Culture and History, African American Short Fiction,
Romantic Literature, and 19th Century British Horror Fiction.
While I have been at LIU, I have been on numerous Departmental
committees including the ARPT (of the English, Philosophy,
and Foreign Language Departments), hiring committees for 18th
century British literature and 19th century British literature,
and the Graduate Committee. I have also been on the campus-wide
Library Committee, the Graduate Committee, the Diaspora Day
Committee, the Curriculum Committee, and the Latin American
and Caribbean Studies Program Committee.
My main service to the University has been as coordinator
of the Voices of the Rainbow series, which has been running
for 12 years and has presented over 100 free readings. The
series, celebrating diversity and the oral tradition, has
been attended by several thousand students and outside guests.
Speakers have included Yevgeny Yevtushenko, Gwendolyn Brooks,
Dorothy Allison, Chang-Rae Lee, Ha Jin, Gloria Naylor, Edwidge
Danticat, and Ishmael Reed.
