This course is intended for students with some facility in the spoken language who need to improve pronunciation and writing ability. Three credits per semester.


Spanish 100 Spanish Conversation

Intensive practice in the spoken language based on the contemporary Spanish and Latin America texts and current publications. Three credits.

An introduction to literary movements and genres from the medieval period to the present. Conducted in Spanish. Three credits.


Spanish 103 Advanced conversation and Composition

Intensive oral and written work on cultural topics related to the Spanish-speaking world to develop ease and style in writing and speaking Spanish. Three credits.


Spanish 105 The Hispanic World

A study of the ethnic, social, political and artistic development of the Spanish speaking world. Conducted in Spanish. Three credits.

Readings, discussions, and interpretations of representative selections from drama, poetry, short stories, and novels of contemporary authors in the Spanish language, with emphasis on the generation of 1898. Conducted in Spanish. Three credits.

Readings of representative works by Spanish-American authors from the Colonial period to the present. Conducted in Spanish. Three credits.


Spanish 137 Contemporary Puerto Rican Literature
Prerequisite: Spanish 31, 32; 50, 51 or the equivalent

Study of twentieth-century Puerto Rican fiction, poetry and theatre from 1930 to the present. Conducted in Spanish. Three credits.


Spanish 138 The Contemporary Latin American Novel
Prerequisite: Spanish 31, 32; 50, 51 or the equivalent

Study of works by Mallea, Sabato, Cortazar, Carpentier, Rulfo, Fuentes and Garcia Marquez. Conducted in Spanish. Three credits.


Spanish 139 Outstanding Women Writers of the Spanish-Speaking World
Prerequisite: Spanish 31, 32; 50, 51 or the equivalent

An examination of the works of women writers of the last 50 years in Spain and Spanish America. Works include poetry, short stories, novels and critical essays by representative writers, including Gabriela Mistral, Rosario Castellanos, Rosario Ferre, Ana Maria Matute and Carmen Laforet. Conducted in Spanish. Three credits.


Spanish 140 Literature of social Protest and Revolution
Prerequisite: Spanish 31, 32; 50, 51 or the equivalent

An examination of the works of writers of social conscience and revolution in Spanish American, beginning with 1910 and the Mexican Revolution and the continuing to the present. Includes poetry, short stories, novels and critical essays by representative writers, including Mariano Azuela, Pablo Neruda and Juan Rulfo. Conducted in Spanish. Three credits.


Spanish 195, 196 Honors Study/ Independent Studies
Honors Study is designed to give outstanding students an opportunity to do independent work in their major under the guidance of a member of faculty. There are no regular class meetings. To be eligible, students must have upper junior of senior status, a cumulative quality-point ration of 3.00 and 3.25 in their major subject, and the permission of the Chair of the Department and the Dean. A total six credits of Honors Study are the maximum allowed. Three credits per semester.


Spanish 200 Spanish Translation I
Prerequisite: Spanish 11. Spanish 12, English 61, their equivalents, or Special permission of the department.

The course centers around the intensive practice of Spanish-English and English-Spanish translation, using a wide variety of prose texts. It will provide the students with the basic theoretical groundwork necessary for translation in general, as well as Spanish-English and English-Spanish Translation in particular.


Spanish 201 Spanish Translation II
Prerequisite: Spanish 11. Spanish 12, English 61, their equivalents, or Special permission of the department. Spanish Translation I is not required.

The course centers around the intensive practice of Spanish-English and English-Spanish translation, using complex prose passages from a variety of discourses. Advance theoretical readings will complement the translation assignments, in addition to which an original, independent translation project of some length will be required.
