Latin American and Caribbean Studies is an interdisciplinary field that provides students with broad understanding of an important and diverse region of the world, and equips them with skills needed to excel in the 21st century. A cross-cultural understanding of the Latin American-Caribbean region, opens a window onto histories and perspectives that broaden horizons and increase marketable skills.
The program covers Latin American and Caribbean politics, cultures, and societies; dependency theory (which originated in the region), modernization, and corporatism; class, race, gender, and ethnicity; nationalism; religion (Liberation Theology); study of political and social movements, popular revolutions and socialist experiments, military coups and regimes, human rights concepts and movements; contributions of the region to the arts (magical realism, poetry, murals, dance, music, theatre) and international law; languages and literature.
Students in any school at LIU-Brooklyn (health Sciences, Pharmacy, Education, Arts and Sciences, and Humanities) may pursue and benefit from an academic minor in Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS).
