This project assessed the availability and effectiveness of the New
York City shelter system and their programs for reintegrating clients
into the community. The research was limited to shelters in Queens run
by the Department of Homeless Services. A survey was administered to
four shelters (27 percent of total) in Queens and to 618 shelter residents
and administers (80 percent of total population). The findings suggest
that reintegration programs are most effective among homeless families.
There is also some success with men and the least success among women
shelter residents.
