These programs lead to the degree of Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science and eligibility for initial NYS teaching certification. The program in Adolescence Urban Education leads to certification in Adolescence, grades 7-12, preparing students to teach one of the content areas (Biology, Chemistry, English, Math, Social Studies, or Spanish) at the secondary school level. The program in Adolescence/Middle Childhood Urban Education leads to dual certification in Adolescence Education, grades 7-12 and Middle Childhood Education, grades 5-6. It prepares students to teach one of the content areas at the middle or secondary school level.
The program of study in Adolescence Urban Education consists of 30 credits in Teaching and Learning. The program of study for dual certification in Adolescence and Middle Childhood Education consists of 37 credits in Teaching & Learning. In addition, all students must complete a second major in their content area specititley. Fieldwork is required throughout the program.
An optional extension in Bilingual Education prepares students to teach in bilingual classrooms.
The program is divided into a pre-professional stage and a professional stage. All students are welcome to take pre-professional courses. Students must meet specific criteria for progression into the professional stage, admission to student teaching, and graduation.
Students graduating from the program are eligible for NYS certification once they have passed all required portions of the New York State Teacher Certification Exam (NYSTCE). The TAL Certification Officer assists students in applying for certification when all requirements are met. |
