Sara Salloum has joined the faculty of Long Island University’s Teaching and Learning department as an assistant professor and Program Coordinator in Adolescent Urban Education. She has recently received her Doctorate from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her area of specititley is Science Education. Salloum’s research interests involve teachers’ practical knowledge: its nature and development. She is also interested in development of science conceptual understandings in students and teachers. Her research plans include exploring ways to help teachers better adopt reform notions in ways that improve their practice and help them realize equitable teaching.
Prior to coming to LIU, Salloum was an elementary and middle school mathematics and science teacher for several years in Lebanon. At UIUC, Salloum has taught secondary and elementary science teaching methods courses. She also worked as a research assistant on an NSF funded ITR grant. She is a member of the National Association of Research in Science Teaching (NARST) and the American Educational Research Association (AERA). She serves on the Outstanding Paper Committee for NARST and also as a proposal assessor. Salloum has presented her research and conducted interactive sessions at national and international conferences. She has published in the International Journal of Science Education. She has Masters from the American University of Beirut; and a Bachelor of Science from the Lebanese American University in Beirut.
