How do I know if I will be accepted? You will be accepted on the basis of your high school record and recommendations. To be eligible for scholarships you must also provide SAT or your ACT scores.
What degree do I need to be a Math Teacher? In addition to a major in math, you will also need a second major in Teaching and Learning (TAL). The program in Adolescence Urban Education (Grades 7-12) leads to a B.S. degree in the Teaching of Math
(30 credits). You can also obtain a B.S. degree in Middle Childhood and Urban Adolescence Education (Grades 5-12) which gives a dual certification for grades 5-9 and 7-12 (37 credits). The courses you take in Adolescence Urban Education are divided into two stages: Pre-professional and Professional. ALL students are accepted into the Pre-professional stage which makes up the first 6 credits. Then, you are reviewed by the faculty to find out if you can enter the Professional Stage.
What are the requirements for the Professional Stage? You must have completed a minimum of 66 general credits with
an overall minimum grade average of 2.5, successfully completed any required mathematics and English courses and achieved a
minimum 3.0 average in the Pre-professional courses.
How many credits must I take in Adolescence Urban Education? You need 30-37 credits including 12 credits earned
during your senior year in Student Teaching. Upon admittance to Student Teaching, it is a full-time experience for one semester that
consists of all day teaching in an appointed school.
What are the requirements to be admitted to Student Teaching? A minimum of 100 credits with an overall GPA of 2.67,
a minimum of 18 credits in Teaching and Learning with a GPA of 3.0, evidence of having passed the LAST (Liberal Arts and Sciences
Test), and attendance at an orientation session with the Student Teacher faculty coordinator, a positive reference from a TAL professor and successful completion of an interview with a faculty member.
