Paraprofessional Support Network at Long Island University

The School of Education welcomes paraprofessionals who have been working side by side with teachers in the New York City public schools and want to begin their journey to become a classroom teacher.
We offer the following:
- Through the Department of Education’s Career Training Program, your tuition at LIU will be paid. The DOE pays the CUNY rate of tuition, which is significantly lower than the cost of attending LIU. LIU is willing to make up that difference in order to support the dedicated paraprofessionals who want to make this commitment. The CTP pays for 6 credits (2 courses) each semester. The final student teaching semester is more than 6 credits and will also be covered by CTP.
- Para News & Views, a newsletter for and by the paraprofessionals is published throughout the school year. Go to this link to see the back issues: We welcome articles and comments by paraprofessionals. Contact the editor, Charlotte Marchant for more information.
- Para support meetings are held each semester. At these meetings, paras have an opportunity to meet each other and discuss some of the issues they face as college students, employees of the DOE and in their families as they continue on their journey to become teachers.
