The mission
of the Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University is "to open
the doors of the city and the world to men and women of all ethnic
and socioeconomic backgrounds who wish to achieve the satisfaction
of the educated life and to serve the public good." Admission
to and progression through the graduate programs in Education
have been carefully designed to respond to the campus mission.
Although all
students who meet academic criteria are admitted to Graduate Programs
in the School of Education, only students who have passed the
LAST or hold NYS certification are directly admitted to NYS Teacher
Certification programs.
Graduate
programs in the School of Education are of two kinds:
NYS Teacher
Certification Programs, for students interested in NYS initial
or professional certification
Non-Certification
Programs, for students interested in a graduate degree in teaching
which does not grant NYS Teacher Certification
To qualify
for the NYS Teacher Certification programs, students must pass
the LAST and the ATS-W within the first thirty credits. Students
who meet all other criteria will graduate from non-certification
programs.
Admission
to School of Education*
- Bachelors
degree from accredited institution
- 2.75 undergraduate

of all General Education requirements* (See Advisor)

Registration and progression criteria apply to all programs, Certification
and Non-Certification programs. International students who apply
to non-certification programs will be assessed, but will be allowed
to take a full load. Extra language courses might be prescribed
for these students.

Under no circumstances will students be permitted to go beyond
6 credits unless a score of 3 has been achieved in the Essay
part
of the SOE Assessment.
All courses
in graduate programs have been divided into four Tiers. Since
not all programs have the same number of total credits, the number
of credits in the Tiers vary. All students are reviewed by faculty
teams to progress to the next Tier. Admission to the NYS Teacher
Certification Stream is contingent upon passing the LAST.
Following
is the structure of all graduate programs:
Tier
I Diversity, Language and Literacies in Urban Education
(Initial 6 credits)
Tier

(Next 9-18 credits, Courses below TAL 830: Classroom Inquiry

Tier

Progression
through Tiers
To progress from Tier I to Tier II for students limited to 6 credits:
Students will be reviewed by a Faculty Team consisting of faculty

Teacher Certification Stream for Tier III

to Tier III and as soon as students complete over 50% of credit
requirements for their graduate program, students will be eligible
to apply for an Internship Certificate. The Internship Certificate
will be granted only to those students who have passed the LAST
and who have been recommended by the Faculty Director of Teaching
Practice.

prior to being admitted to Tier IV will not graduate from a program
that leads to NYS Teacher Certification.
To graduate
from any SOE program for students completing the capstone course:

New
York State Teacher Certification Exam Preparation
Students
must pass three New York State Teacher Certification Examinations
(NYSTCE) upon graduation in order to receive New York State certification:
- The Liberal
Arts and Sciences Test (LAST)
- The Assessment
of Teaching Skills-Written (ATS-W)
- The Content
Specititley Test (CST)
In addition,
students seeking the Bilingual Education extension must pass
the Bilingual Education Assessment (BEA) in the target language
of instruction of the New York State Teacher Certification
Exam (NYSTCE).
To help graduate
students achieve successful passing scores in all three examinations,
there is a NYSTCE Test Prep Coordinator. The Coordinator offers
advisement, guidance, tutoring and workshops to students on a
continuous basis. She also coordinates TAL 099, the Test Prep
course. Students who go through the graduate programs and who
are interested in New York State Certification are required to
do the following:
- 1. Immediately
upon admissions, students who have not passed the LAST will
be required to register for TAL 099, Preparing for the NYSTCE:
A course for Educators, unless they achieve exemption scores
on the SOE Assessment Battery. Students who are recommended
to take the LAST directly will be required to attend a LAST
Workshop before sitting for the test.
- 2. All
graduate students must take the LAST and achieve a qualifying
score of 200 before being admitted to Tier III. All graduate
students must take the ATS-W and achieve a qualifying score
of 200 before being admitted to Tier IV. LAST & ATS-W Workshops
are offered on a continuing basis prior to each NYSTCE administration.
- 3. Only
students who have passed the LAST and the ATS-W will be admitted
to the NYS Teacher Certification Stream for Tier IV and be allowed
to student teach. Students who have not passed the LAST and
ATS-W prior to being admitted to Tier IV will not graduate from
a program that leads to NYS Teacher Certification.
- 4. Students
in NYS Teacher Certification Programs must take and pass the
CST prior to graduation.
