Admission, Progression, Graduation, and Certification Requirements


This program, which is only for individuals with prior teaching certification, leads to 2nd initial certification in Teaching Literacy, Birth to Grade 6.  Applicants must also hold a master’s degree in education or related area.  Students completing the program are eligible for certification once they have passed the Content Specialty Test (CST) in their area of specialization
.

With permission, up to 6 credits of applicable graduate coursework from other institutions or up to 12 credits of applicable graduate coursework from LIU may be applied towards the completion of programs in Literacy.

Courses are scheduled in the late afternoon or evening.   Fifty practicum hours are required.

An Advanced Certificate program is also available for individuals interested in Teaching Literacy, Grades 5-12.

Individuals who do not hold a prior master’s degree may pursue our M.S.ED. in Teaching Literacy.

Admission Requirements:

 
  • Master’s degree in education or a related area.
  • 3.0 minimum graduate GPA
  • Initial NYS teaching certification
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Statement of professional goals
