Admission, Progression, Graduation, and Certification Requirements

This program, which is only for individuals with prior teaching certification, leads to the degree of Master of Science in Education and 2nd initial certification in Teaching Literacy, Birth - Grade 6.  Students completing the program are eligible for certification once they have passed the Content Specialty Test (CST) in their area of specialization. In addition, they will be eligible for professional certification in their first certification area. An optional extension is available for students wishing to teach in bilingual classrooms (9 credits).

With permission, up to 6 credits of applicable graduate coursework from other institutions or up to 12 credits of applicable graduate coursework from LIU may be applied towards the completion of programs in Literacy.

Courses are scheduled in the late afternoon or evening.  Fifty practicum hours are required.

M.S.E.D. programs are also available for individuals who are interested in Teaching Literacy, Grades 5-12 or Dual Level Certification, Birth to Grade 12 . Another option, for individuals with a prior master's degree in education or a related field, is the Advanced Certificate in Teaching Literacy, Birth to Grade 6 (24-25 credits).

Individuals without prior teaching certification who are interested in teaching literacy may pursue one of our M.S.ED. programs leading to 1st initial certification (Childhood Urban Education  |   Early Childhood/Childhood Urban Education  |   Adolescence Urban Education  |   Teaching Urban Children with Disabilities  |   Teaching Urban Adolescents with Disabilities) followed by the Advanced Certificate program.

Admission Requirements:

 
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution,
  • 2.75 minimum undergraduate GPA.
  • Initial NYS teaching certification
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Statement of professional goals
