AREA STUDIES: CENTRAL AMERICAN
REALITY 6
A weekly seminar with the goal of providing an understanding of
the history and present situation of Central America through informal
lectures, group discussions, field trips, videos, guest speakers
and readings. The seminar covers the historical roots of the
area (indigenous societies, the conquest, colonization, neocolonialism);
the role of the region in the global economy; the political crisis
of the 1980’s; and the current regional economic, political
and social reality. Active participation in and proper documentation
of the learning experiences in the seminar, the field trips in Costa
Rica, and a 17-day field trip through Nicaragua and Honduras are
requirements for earning credit.
LANGUAGE AND WRITING:

SPANISH FOR BEGINNER STUDENTS
Spanish classes for beginners have the goal of forming basic oral
and written communication skills, as well as introducing the students
to the Latin culture. To achieve these goals, the students meet
three times a week for a total of 8 1/2 hours. They also complete
daily assignments, participate in field projects, live with a Costa
Rican family and interact daily with Spanish-speaking people.
ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES: NATURAL RESOURCES 3
AND CONSERVATION
The most urgent environmental issues and actions in Central America
are introduced through a series of field-study trips, videos, readings
and discussions. The seminar focuses on deforestation, indigenous
peoples, environmental protection actions, impact of tourism, ecological
tourism, intensive and alternative agriculture and other topics
chosen by participants. Five field trips in Costa Rica are
complemented with field visits, readings and lectures in Nicaragua,
El Salvador and Honduras during the CAR trip.
HUMAN ISSUES : WOMEN'S STUDIES 2
An experiential seminar with the goal of facilitating a historical,
contextual and cross-cultural understanding of women's oppression
and gender relationships. Students participate in a series of awareness-raising
exercises, informal lectures, group discussions, and independent
research on issues of their interests. Active participation in the
seminar, field trips, observations, interviews, readings and proper
documentation of the learning are requirements for credits.
