Global College/Friends World's 1700-plus alumni have risen to prominence in a wide variety of fields and professions. The following profiles highlight several of our graduates. For their story, just click on their name.
 

Aric Clark is a full-time student in the M.Div. program at San Francisco Theological Seminary in San Anselmo, CA. It was his experiences in Taiwan, Thailand, Italy, Greece and Turkey while on the Comparative Religion and Culture (CRC) course that influenced- and changed what he wanted to do with his life. Katherine Fleming-Strous is a Professional Skills and Development Training Manager in Hangzhou, China. She uses the skills she learned while attending Global College to provide on-site training and program development of professional skill sets aimed at increasing the effectiveness and capabilities of working with global clients. Katherine spent two years in China and a year on the Comparative Religion and Culture (CRC) course before graduating in May 2005.

 

Serena Bartlett is the founder of GrassRoutes Travel: www.grassroutestravel.com a company whose aim is to promote localized travel, and ideas for sustainable living through guide books. She studied in Southampton and London as a freshman in 2002, in Lake Tahoe and Los Angles in 2003, in Germany and London in 2004, and in Kyoto in 2005.

 

 

Sheva Carr studied at the Costa Rica Center from 1989-1990, where she had a life-altering experience with the street children of war-torn Nicaragua. Twelve years after her return home, she was reunited with some of the children, now adults, that she left behind in Nicaragua, who contacted her via the internet. Together with these children, she formed the Fyera Foundation and the Sunflower SunPower Kids Program, of which she is now the Executive Director.

 

Andrew Cote graduated from Friends World in 1997 and is currently a full-time Assistant Professor of English as a Second Language at Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Andrew received a Fulbright in TEFL and taught for one year in The Republic of Moldova, Eastern Europe, 2003-2004. (Received Fulbright at age 31, more than two decades younger than the age of the average Fulbright recipient).

 

Rebecca Harris graduated from Friends World in 2004 with a concentration in Peace & Conflict Studies. She is currently the head of U.S. fundraising for TLC, a Johannesburg orphanage I discovered while doing my senior thesis in South Africa. Anne Marsa graduated from Friends World in 2003 and is a M.A. Candidate in Ethics, Peace & Global Affairs at American University's School of International Service. Anne is currently the dialogue coordinator for a Track II Diplomacy effort at Hands Along the Nile Development Services, an NGO in the Washington, D.C. area; working to bridge cultural, religious, and political gaps between Egyptians and Americans through dialogue.

 

Jennifer Baccellieri graduated from Friends World in 2000. She is a Certified Herbalist from the Southwest School of Botanical Medicine and a Certified Holistic Health Counselor from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition in NYC.

 

Costas Christ graduated from Friends World in 1980 and received his MA from the University of Oregon in 1985. Costas is currently working for the National Geographic Society as an Editor and Columnist, also serving as a Chairman for the World Travel and Tourism Council-Tourism for Tomorrow Awards.

 

Marie Louka graduated from Friends World in 1989 and received her MSc in Agriculture Education, from the University of Arizona in 1995. Anne is currently in the process of creating a business in Spain, an apprenticeship for rammed earth building (www.madrugadatapial.com). The Rammed Earth Apprenticeship will combine components of the FW system (learning plans, mentors), the UCSC Organic Agriculture Apprenticeship (living on site, a combination of book and hands-on learning), and many of the volunteer jobs that I’ve had along the way.

 

Kevin Robinson-Avila graduated from Friends World in 1984 after spending the majority of his undergraduate career in Latin America. Upon completion of his BA degree from FWC, he remained in Central America as a foreign correspondent until 1992 and since then has worked as an editor, PR Director and is currently a staff reporter for the New Mexico Business Weekly.
