Traditionally a home to scholars and artists, Hangzhou continues to be a center of learning in China and many universities are located here. Global College China Center, which has been in China since 1985 first in Hong Kong and then in Jilin province, moved to its present location in the city of Hangzhou in 1989. Located on the Jade Spring (Yuquan) Campus of Zhejiang University, it is within walking distance to West Lake.

In 2004 Zhejiang University was ranked fourth among the most prestigious universities in China. It is the most comprehensive university in the country, with fields of study in eleven disciplines, namely philosophy, literature, history, education, science, economics, law, management, engineering, agriculture and medicine. As the first university in China to establish a graduate school authorized to confer masters and doctoral degrees, Zhejiang University today has twenty-one colleges offering a total of 110 undergraduate programs, 264 master degree programs and 181 doctoral programs. There are over 8,000 faculty and staff, including over 3,000 full and associate professors. Presently, the total number of fulltime students has reached well over 42,000, including over 25,000 undergraduates and over 16,000 graduate students.

The China Center has been fortunate to receive support from both Zhejiang University and Long Island University to expand, remodel and refurnish the existing facilities. With a newly painted interior, new flooring, lighting, and air conditioning, students will find the refurbished Center a professional and welcoming environment in which to study and relax. The previous multi-function room has been expanded to twice its original size and a faculty office space was added to give students better access to their advisors. The newly designed computer room will be equipped with a broadband ADSL Internet connection and the multi-function room will be equipped with a Wi-Fi Internet connection and a digital data projector and screen for multimedia presentations and films.
