Since the LAC has a large student population, we have a team which maintains a low student/team ratio. We have two Co-Coordinators, Administrative and Academic. Our Spanish program has three part time staff who work to develop new programs and approaches to language study as well as coordinating the classes and other activities. Faculty members who also serve as advisors often coordinate the seminar. Our team also includes a secretary, a handyman, a handyman and a faculty/staff assistant.

Amparo García (Shanti Vidya) - Faculty Advisor. Shanti is a specialist in Community Planning and more recently she has done research and practice on alternative healing. B.A. - Social Promotion, National University - Costa Rica; Lic. - Social and Economic Planning, National University; Masters in Communication (work in progress)….. Academic interests include alternative medicine, rural and community development. Has worked with rural populations in Costa Rica and Africa, institutions and the European community of Costa Rica.

Emilio Vargas Mena - Faculty Advisor and Coordinator of the "People and the Natural Environment" One-Year Program. He is an Environmental Sociologist, with expertise in teaching, research, and outreach on social and political aspects of forestry, wildlife and tourism. B.A., Sociology, University of Costa Rica, San Jose. M.A., Sociology, University of Costa Rica, San Jose. Emilio joined Friends World in 1987. His academic interest and specialty in Environmental and Rural Sociology, with a focus on participatory research, planning, environmental education, environmental oral history, cultural ecology and more. He is a part-time faculty member of the Regional Program on Wildlife Management for Mesoamerica and the Caribbean.

Jorge Caceres - Faculty Advisor and Coordinator of the "Peace and Reconciliation" One-Year Program. He is a specialist in Political Sciences and International Relations. Ph.D., Latin American Studies, J.D., El Salvador, (his native country). Jorge studies politics in England and the United States. He has served as an Advisor at the LAC prior to becoming Faculty Director. He also teaches International Relations at the National University in Heredia, Costa Rica.

Antonio Leitón - Student Services Coordinator and Academic Assistant. Born and raised in Costa Rica. Attended the University of Costa Rica. Attended Whatcom Community College; Received B.S. Environmental Studies, Major in Environmental Policy and Assessment, Western Washington University; Masters in Educational Leadership, Farmingham State College, Massachusetts, 2001.

Lorena Vargas -Spanish Program Coordinator. B.A., Literature and Science of Language, National University, Costa Rica; B.A., Spanish Literature, National University. Holds a Masters Degree in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language. Part of the center’s development team for the intensive immersion Spanish language program. Previously worked at the Cuerpo de Paz (Body of Peace) Institute as a Spanish professor.

Guiselle Román - Spanish Professor, and sociologist working toward the completion of her Masters Degree on Regional Relations. Born and raised in Costa Rica. Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree, National University, Costa Rica. Sociology background, she has worked as Spanish Facilities with the LAC for a long time.

Yobeth Cabalceta -Spanish Professor. B.A., Literature and Linguistics, National University of Costa Rica (Spanish concentration). She has been with Global College since 1991.

Ileana Castro -Administrative Coordinator in charge of all the administrative matters of the Center, and also Field Trip Coordinator. Bachelors Degree from National University, Costa Rica with formal studies in Psychology and Sociology. Independent studies in Political Sciences, Massage, Natural Healing Methods, Herbal Medicine, and Jewelry. Currently studying Documentary Video Production. Born in Guatemala, joined Friends World in 1981, when the LAC had moved from Guatemala to Costa Rica. Has a variety of experiences with the Program. Coordinated the Spanish Program for 9 years. Administrative Coordinator for 1 year. Students Affairs Coordinator for 5 years. Coordinated the Central American Reality Seminar for 2.5 years. Field Trip Coordinator in Costa Rica and Central America for 7 years.

Marcenette Chavarria - Secretary and Home Stay Coordinator. B.A., Bilingual Executive Secretary, Gregg University, Costa Rica. Marce has a varied background in management and business, and uses her translation skills with the students, expanding her experience with foreign students.
