History & Culture

Global College's South Africa Center is located in Durban, the third largest city in South Africa.

Interesting Facts:

  • Durban’s Townships:
    • Artifacts of the Group Areas Act of 1950; assigned racial identities to business and residential areas
    • Townships clearly define ethnic and racial divides among neighborhoods
  • Townships have distinct histories and cultures:
    • KwaMashu-noted for a lively performance art scene; drama, dance and music are promoted
    • Phoenix-home of a large segment of the Indian community; associated with Gandhi’s presence in South Africa
  • The Constitution of 1994 and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission:
    • Provides principles of equality and nondiscrimination
    • Eventually will minimize ethnic and racial divides
