Master of Public Health Program (M.P.H)


About the Program
The M.P.H. program is a professional degree program for individuals seeking training and experience in applied public health. The 42-credit program has strong interactions with community organizations and health-care providers as well as with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. It answers a growing demand for skilled public health professionals and leads to diverse and rewarding career opportunities. Successful candidates for the program must have received a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and fulfill the academic criteria for admission.

Application Procedures

To apply to the M.P.H. program, a complete graduate application packet must be submitted to:
The Office of Admissions
Brooklyn Campus
Long Island University

 Your application packet must include:

  • A non-refundable check or money order for $30, made payable to Long Island University (if you do not submit the above form online)

  • Official transcript indicating graduation with a bachelor’s degree (minimum 2.8 G.P.A. on a 4.0 scale)
  • Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended; degrees from institutions outside the United States or Canada must be evaluated by an agency recommended by the University.
  • Two Reference Forms from individuals who can comment on your academic background and volunteer or community experience (click here for format)

  • Work Experience Form (click here for format)

  • Graduate test scores: official GRE or MAT score required. Test scores more than five years old will NOT be accepted. Applicants with official transcripts showing completed graduate degrees are NOT required to submit graduate test scores.
  • TOEFL exam:  International applicants who do not have an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university or whose native language is not English are required to submit official scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

Courses in the Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) Curriculum

MPH 710                   Foundations of Public Health: Concepts and Administration

Provides an overview of community and public health issues that involve an examination of the healthcare system in its entirety. Attention will be directed toward those historical and administrative features unique to the field of public health.

 

MPH 715                   Public Health Epidemiology

The study of the distribution and determinants of health and disease in defined populations. The course will emphasize the skills necessary to research, produce, utilize and critique epidemiologic literature. 

 

MPH 720                   Biostatistics for Public Health

Entry, analysis and application of public health statistics.  Descriptive and inferential analyses through multivariate linear models are addressed.

 

MPH 725                  Theoretical Foundations of Public Health

Role of theory in shaping research and practice in health promotion and education; historical and ongoing interaction between health education and the applied social sciences. 

 

MPH 730                   Environmental Health Issues in Public Health

This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to and overview of the key areas of environmental health. Using the perspectives of the population and community, the course will cover factors associated with the development of environmental health problems.  

 

MPH 735                   Research Methods in Public Health

Research methods applicable to the study of individual and group health behavior.  Introduction to research design and methods applicable to the study of public health including the logic of scientific research, research ethics, causal inference, hypothesis formation, measurement theory, survey research, experimental design, qualitative methods, sampling, and data analysis applications. 

 

MPH 740                   Principles of Public Health Informatics and Communication

The purpose of this course is to provide students with a basic understanding of “Informatics” and its application in a Public Health setting. The goal is for students to understand the basic technological tools and building blocks needed to develop and manage public health data collection systems to meet analytical needs.

 

MPH 745                   Concepts and Methods in Public Health

Fundamental principles and practices of public health promotion including history, ethics, cultural competence, professional responsibilities, overview of theory and models, and selection and implementation of instructional methods. 

 

MPH 750                   Organizational Theory and Behavior in Public Health

The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to the fields of organization theory and organizational behavior and their application to the management of health care organizations. The course will cover both “macro” and “micro” level issues relevant to health care organizations. Methods of instruction include readings, lectures, class discussions, self-assessments, interactive exercises, videos, and an industry-based project. 

 

MPH 755 Public Health Planning and Evaluation

An overview of health promotion planning frameworks and issues in planning, implementing and evaluating health promotion programs in a variety of settings. 

 

MPH 798 Public Health Practicum I

The student will accomplish preliminary aspects of the practicum including survey design and IRB approval as needed. Preliminary work on the practicum report will be written during this time. The student will be onsite as appropriate.

 

MPH 799 Public Health Practicum II

The student will complete the practicum including data collection and analysis as appropriate. The practicum report will be completed during this time. The student will be onsite as appropriate.
