RESEARCH LAB

The Research Lab is a 1200 Sq. ft. room located at the 2nd floor of the Zeckendorf health Science building.
It is used for research projects in the areas of:

  • Motion analysis
  • Gait analysis
  • Physiological effects of physical activity
  • Reliability and validity of clinical instruments
  • Motor control

Physical Therapy Education
The faculty is also involved in research in the areas of Physical Therapy Education, Cultural Competence and Outcomes Assessment. Data analysis for these projects utilize the computers and software applications located at the research lab.

EQUIPMENT

GAITRite system
The GAITRite system consists of an electronic walkway connected to a personal computer that automatically evaluates temporal spatial parameters of gait in real-time. The GAITRite system also evaluates pressure on the foot during ambulation. It objectifies the ambulation patterns of patients and can be used in clinical and research applications.

Optotrak 3020 Motion Analysis System, Northern Digital Inc.
This Optical digitizing system measures 3-dimensional motion and position by tracking up to 18 markers attached to a subject. As the subject moves, Optotrak detects the position of the markers (infrared light-emitting diodes) and simultaneously calculates precise 3D data for each. This 3D data is displayed in real time, allowing you to monitor data throughout a trial.

Modular EMG System, Therapeutics Unlimited
This is a modular, 8-channel, EMG system that interfaces with a microcomputer for high speed data collection, storage and display

LabVIEW Full Development System, v. 5.1, National Instruments
LabVIEW is a graphical programming language for instrumentation, data acquisition and analysis

MATLAB 6.1, Release 12.1, The Mathworks
MATLAB integrates mathematical computing, visualization, and a powerful language to provide a flexible environment for technical computing. The open architecture makes it easy to use MATLAB and its companion products to explore data, create algorithms, and create custom tools that provide early insights and competitive advantages.

Abattoir
Abattoir is a programming library for MATLAB (ver. 6 and higher) that consists of many of the basic routines used in analyzing biomechanics data

Peak 5 Motion Measurement System
The Peak 5 system is a 2-D motion measurement system (can be upgraded to 3-D with other equipment) that uses reflective markers and a video camera to track motion. Videos are digitized after data collection through a combination of automatic and manual processes. Digitized data are fed into analysis software that generates easily customized stick figures, parameter and analogue graphs. Provides angular displacement, velocity, acceleration

Quinton Electrocardiogram and Treadmill
This device is used to perform exercise stress tests

Cybex Extremity System 340
This device is useful for collecting force data in a single plane of motion. It can accommodate isometric, concentric, eccentric and isokinetic motions
