Rebecca States , PhD
E-mail: Rebecca.States@liu.edu
Dr. States has a long-standing interest in interdisciplinary research as it relates to physical therapy. Dr. States earned a MA in Motor Learning and Control from Teachers College, and a Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology with a focus on motor control from Columbia University. Motor control is a field that investigates the interface between neuroscience and biomechanics, whereas motor learning examines the conditions necessary for learning motor skills. Dr. States' recent research activities have been directed at interdisciplinary education of physical therapy and other health professions students, as well as on aspects of motor control. She has been PI or Co-PI for three federally funded grants and recently completed a HRSA-funded project whose goal was to enhance interdisciplinary education for health professions students related to care for older adults from minority or disadvantaged backgrounds. That collaborative project delivered community education to over 1000 well-elderly minority clients, developed two new interdisciplinary computer conferencing modules for health professions students, and created a website for healthcare practitioners, educators and consumers interested in interdisciplinary approaches to community education with older adults. Dr. States has also been active in faculty governance and faculty development activities. For example, she led an effort to adopt a new campus wide student evaluation form; she worked on various initiatives to increase the research productivity of faculty throughout the Brooklyn Campus; and she has acted as vice president of the Long Island University Faculty Federation, the faculty union.
