Application Information

I. APPLICATION

  1. New students requesting to live in the Residence Hall must fill out a housing application. THIS IS SEPARATE from the application to attend LIU. You may download the housing application online, pick up an application at the Office of Residence Life, or call us at 718-488-1046 and request an application be mailed to you.
  2. Students returning to the Residence Hall must participate in the housing lottery in order to receive priority for housing. If you fail to participate in the housing lottery, your application will be pooled with all incoming students.
  3. Before the end of the Fall Semester, current residents are required to submit a Housing Renewal Form indicating whether they will be returning to the Residence Hall for the Spring Semester or they are canceling their housing.

II. FEES

  1. All applications must be accompanied by a $150 non-refundable application fee, which will be used towards the payment of your housing charges

  2. All bills must be cleared (zero balance or an established payment plan) with our Bursar’s Office prior to moving into the Residence Hall.   3. If you have to cancel your housing assignment, please be advised that the University has a STRICT refund schedule. Prior to the beginning of the semester, all cancellations will result in full refunds. Once the semester begins the refund schedule is as follows:
    Week 1 - 90% refund
    Week 2 - 75% refund
    Week 3 - 50% refund
    Week 4 - 25% refund
    Week 5 - No refund


  4. A full meal plan A full meal plan ($1,490, $1465, or $1,335) is required for all LIU residents not assigned to an apartment type accomodation. Visiting students, students living in apartment type rooms, and students employed full time may choose among the $1,335, $1,465, or $1,490 meal plans. Your meal plan includes a specified number of meals per week with a specific flexible dollar amount to be used over the course of one semester. The meal plan can only be used in Blackbird Cafeteria in the residence hall, but the flexible dollars may be used at any of the three cafeterias on campus. III. ASSIGNEMNTS

  1. Can I pick my roommate?
    a. Students may request a specific roommate on their application. However your application and the other person's application should indicate that you both wish to be roommates.

  2. Can I choose the room I want to live in?
    a. Students new to the Residence Hall may indicate the type of room they wish to live in, but may not select the a specific room.
    b. Students returning to the Residence Hall may retain their current room (if available) or go through the housing lottery process. If a returning student does not retain their room or go through the housing lottery, their application will be processed as an incoming student.

  3. How will my preferences be honored?
    a. Similar to the roommate request, these preferences are subject to space and availability

IV. FURNITURE

  1. Each resident is provided with a dresser, bed, desk, chair and a closet or wardrobe. Apartment and suite spaces may have additional furniture such as tables, chairs and couches/armchairs.
  2. No university furniture may be moved into or out of a room without authorization from the Associate Director of Residence Life.
  3. Residents may bring their own furnishings, subject only to space restrictions and the reasonable consent of their roommates.
