  • The George Polk Awards
    LIU students meet prominent media personalities
    like Bill Moyers, Spike Lee and Diane Sawyer at
    the University's annual George Polk Awards seminar.


  • Among the most respected honors in Journalism, the George Polk Awards were founded by Long Island University to memorialize the CBS correspondent slain while covering a civil war in Greece in 1948. The awards have been administered by Long Island University since 1949.


  • Previous winners include Eddie Adams, Christina Amanpour, James Baldwin, Ed Bradley, Jimmy Breslin, Walter Cronkite, Fred Friendly, Henry Louis Gates, Amy Goodman, David Halberstam, Seymour Hersh, Peter Jennings, Pauline Kael, Ted Koppel, Charles Kuralt, Norman Mailer, Mary Ellen Mark, Bill Moyers, Edward R. Murrow, Morley Safer, Harrison Salisbury, Diane Sawyer, Daniel, Schorr, William Shawn, Susan Sontag, I.F. Stone and Nina Totenberg.


  • A committee of jurors who are faculty members or alumni of Long Island University select the winners from entries submitted by journalists and news organizations, as well as nominations made by a panel of journalists and editors, including a number of former winners.


  • The prizes are presented to winners at the annual Polk Awards Luncheon, held in New York City in April. That ceremony is preceded by the annual Polk Awards Seminar, where a panel of Polk Award winners discuss investigative reporting on current events.


  • Many LIU journalism students are invited every spring to attend the Polk Awards Luncheon or Seminar, where they get to meet these extraordinary journalists.
