Jazz
Ken Burns' seven-part documentary, "Jazz," aired on PBS in 2001, is a long and thorough look at the history of America's original art form, but it's not the last word in jazz on video. At the Brooklyn Campus Library Media Center, we have the Ken Burns epic, but we also have materials with much more to say on the subject, often in the form of rare and archival performances by jazz legends.
"Carmen McRae" and "Sonny Rollins and Company with Jim Hall" are both live studio performances from a mid-sixties television show "Ralph J. Gleason's Jazz Casual," which are distinguished by their immediacy and intimacy. "Bill Evans" is a performance by the jazz pianist with his trio. "David, Moffett & Ornette" is a record of a three-day studio session with Ornette Coleman.
"The Buena Vista Social Club" is Wim Wenders' acclaimed, beautifully filmed documentary about jazz in Cuba and American musician Ry Cooder's visit there. The warmth and talents of the aging Cuban musicians light up the film, which culminates in a triumphant performance in New York City.
Two videos - "The Coltrane Legacy" and "The World According to John Coltrane" feature rare footage of performances by the great John Coltrane and his quartet, and also include collaborations with Miles Davis.
Would you like an audience with royalty? "On the Road with Duke Ellington" follows the Duke on tour in 1967-8. "Swingin' the Blues" contains vintage performance footage of Count Basie. Otto Preminger's courtroom thriller "Anatomy of a Murder" boasts a Duke Ellington score.
Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Wynton Marsalis, Sarah Vaughn, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and other jazz legends are to be found in the media center collection. And don't forget to ask about our compact discs, too. Here's a list of jazz videorecordings; ask for them by name:
