Electronic Services Department (Library IT)

The mission of the Electronic Services Department is to provide computing and networking technology and services to all users of the library.

Working in collaboration with the Office of Information Technology at the LIU/Brooklyn Campus, the Electronic Services Department installs, monitors, and maintains various computer systems in the library. We support the teaching and research efforts of the faculty and the students at the LIU Brooklyn Campus.

Computer Resources

There are over 100 computers and printers installed in the library, which are connected through the LIU network in the Windows environment, to facilitate various library daily operations and public services.

Patrons may search the online catalog, LIUCAT, and web-based databases on available computers on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors of the library. Two ADA computers are available for disabled individuals on the 3rd floor.

Printing from the web-based databases is also available on the 3rd floor. The printing charge is $0.10 per page.

Search results may also be e-mailed to individual e-mail addresses or saved to a floppy disk, CD-Rom, or a USB flash drive. Instructions for either of these procedures are available from the librarians or may be found on cards mounted near the computers.

Computer labs located on the 2nd and 4th floors of LLC, and in other buildings on the campus are open if you need to work on word processing, spreadsheets, or other applications. Please call ext.1301 to verify the computer labs' hours of operation.

The Library Cyber Lab (ext. 1882) located on the 5th of LLC is open to all LIU students. Printing is available at the Cyber Lab for ten cents per page.

LIU Brooklyn Campus Library Computing Policy

The Library offers computing resources to the students and faculty of LIU. These reources include the Internet, the Online Catalog, and online databases. These resources are being offered in keeping with our library's stated mission of "providing access to collections and services in support of curricula and programs of Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus."

Other programs, such as word processors and spreadsheets are available in the Library's Cyber Lab on the 5th floor of LLC and on Workstations in the Reference Room on the 3rd floor of LLC. Office of Information Technology's computer labs.

In addition to the policy outlined below,the guidelines set forth by the University must also be adhered to.
 

Proper Use of Library Computing Resources

  • Each computer may be used only for the specific purposes for which it is designated.
  • Use of personal software on library computers is prohibited.
  • No changes to the computer settings are allowed.
  • Use of the library's computers is on a first-come first-served basis and is limited to 30 minutes while people are waiting.
  • Printing from database computers is charged at $0.10 per page. Printing procedures are posted next to the database computers.
  • In offering Internet access, Long Island University cannot guarantee that information found through the Internet is either accurate, authoritative, or factual. Be advised that the Internet is a very dynamic medium, and access points may change at any time without notice. Be aware that the Internet is unregulated and materials accessible through it may be outdated, biased, inappropriate, or offensive. Caution is advised when sending personal information such as name, address, social security number, or credit card number over the Internet.

Violation of Library Computing Policies

  • The University may take disciplinary and/or legal action against an individual who violates any of the campus computing policies.
  • The Library may temporarily or permanently suspend an individual's use of library computing facilities. Generally, a person violating the policies for the first time will have his/her computing privileges suspended for two semester weeks. A second violation will result in a suspension of computing privileges for the semester. Such suspensions may be imposed regardless of any computer-related course work the student may have. Hence, students should be aware that a suspension of computing privileges may have serious academic consequences.
  • The Library will report any violation of computing policies that bear on academic dishonesty or plagiarism to the appropriate campus committee(s), the Associate Provost for Student Affairs and/or any other appropriate university entities. These parties will pursue such reports through their usual procedures, and this process will be independent of any action taken by the Library.
