What's our friendly old pal Madonna up to these days? It's been a long time since Desperately Seeking Susan. Last I recall, she made a bland remake with her husband Guy Ritchie of the excellent Lina Wertmuller film that I'll link to here, instead of spelling out the unwieldy Italian title. It's a class comedy about a deckhand and a socialite shipwrecked together in the Mediterranean, and it's infinitely better than ol' Madonna's version. It's a morally complicated comedy in a beautiful setting, and while we're at it, we also recommend two other Wertmuller films in our collection, Sotto, Sotto and The Seduction of Mimi.
Madonna? We don't really care so much what she's up to just now. She still wearing the cowboy hat? Anyway, the Material Girl was just a flashy excuse for us to direct your attention to these other fine flicks.
BCLMC Mailbag
Mr. David St. Hubbins of England writes: Well,
I don't really think that the end can be assessed as of itself as
being the end because what does the end feel like? It's like saying
when you try to extrapolate the end of the universe, you say, if
the universe is indeed infinite, then how - what does that mean?
How far is all the way, and then if it stops, what's stopping it,
and what's behind what's stopping it? So, what's the end, you know,
is my question to you. Thank you, Mr. St. Hubbins. That's an excellent question, I think. We'll get back to you. The universe, you know, it goes to eleven. This issue of BCLMC is brought to you all the way from the back row by Media Assistant and distinguished character actorPatrick Jewell. Tell your friends. |
HOT HOT HOT! It's been a long hot summer. Here are some movies where the temperature is rising and it isn't surprising:
Road Movies The Media Center is moving again; in no particular order, here's a few road movies to send us on our way:
Special Thanks Thanks to Reference Librarian Paul Tremblay for holding down the Media Center fort in the first week of August so the Media Assistant's son could visit his grandmother in Ohio.
Thanks also to Electronic Services Coordinator Ingrid Wang for updating the links in our past newsletters after LIUCAT was recently reformatted.
Farewell and Good Luck Head of Cataloging, devoted Met fan, and loving husband, father, and grandfather Ari Cohen is retiring. He will be missed, and we wish him and his family all the best.
Coming Attraction: the NEW Media Center We are moving to a new location this fall, in the fifth floor stacks. Take a right when you exit the elevator on five and enter the stacks. Make a left at the Circulation desk and another left again and keep going straight on till morning--I mean, straight on about twenty paces and you'll be at our new front door. Stay tuned for further developments, including opening day information.
The current Media Center space and our home for three years will be converted into lecture and classroom space for the Library Instruction program as it works hard to meet the growing demands of Core Seminar classes.
Name the New Media Center! Let us know what you think. Here's a handful we've come up with:
"Most people never have to face the fact that at the right time and the right place, they're capable of anything." Noah Cross [John Huston], Chinatown.
The Media Center is located on the fifth floor of the Library Learning Center. Come up and see us some time. |
