Fifty years ago, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white man, and that simple act of civil disobedience became the spark for the Montgomery Bus Boycott. In an obituary, the New York Times refers to her refusal as "a mythic event that helped touch off the civil rights movement of the 50's and 60's."
Years later, she was the recipient of both the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The memory of her quiet strength and determination will always give us inspiration.
