Policy
of LIU Brooklyn Campus Library Live Reference Chat
What is Live Reference Chat?
Live Reference Chat, from LivePerson, enables patrons to ask
real-time questions to a librarian at the Reference Desk. It
is an instant messaging service that is available year round.
What
Hours is Live Reference Chat available?
 |
Fall
and Spring Semesters: |
Monday
through Thursday, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. |
 |
Summer
Sessions: |
Monday
through Thursday, from 5 p.m. to 7p.m. |
Who
can use the service?
All are invited to use this service regarding LIU Library collections.
Our primary goal is to provide assistance to LIU community (students,
faculty and staff).
What
kinds of questions are appropriate?
Extensive
research question using Live Reference Chat
Extensive research questions are allowed but chances are we
will redirect the user to our Reference Desk (in person or by
phone) as he/she will be served better by talking to a librarian.
If a user has such a question, we invite him/her to visit us
during library hours or call us at 718 780-4513.
What
options do I have when Live Reference Chat is unavailable?
The user always has the option of
 |
phoning
the Reference Desk at (718) 780-4513, or |
 |
sending
an e-mail to libref@brooklyn.liu.edu
(responses within 48 hours when the library is open). |
Why
do you need my name, and institutional affiliation if any?
This information helps us serve our patrons most efficiently.
A name is used for identification (you are welcome to use
a pseudonym or nickname). Your University affiliation helps
us answer your question accurately (many policies vary for
students, faculty, staff, and/or administration). Many resources
are available off-site only to individuals affiliated with
Long Island University. Knowing your LIU affiliation, if any,
will help us to direct you to resources that will best serve
your needs.
