Library Guide
Brooklyn
Campus Library
Reference
service, InterLibrary Loan, and a circulating collection specific
to the LIU curricula are available through the Brooklyn
Campus Library of LIU.
The
Reference Desk, which is staffed during all hours of library operation,
may be reached by calling (718) 780-4513. When a librarian answers the phone, clearly
identify yourself as a student at the Westchester Graduate Campus
and then ask your question. You may also email
us your reference query; we will answer you back as fast as
we possibly can.
Library
Catalog (LIUCAT) & Online Databases
Two computer
labs (rooms 125 and 126) contain a total of 36 PCs which are connected
to the LIU network. They provide Internet access and emulate the
computer terminals that are available in Brooklyn. The Brooklyn
Campus Library page has links to the Online
Databases and the Library
Catalog (LIUCAT), in addition to a full range of pages which
describe the library, explain the resources available, provide a
staff directory and list a variety of Internet sources.
LIUCAT
is accessible from any Internet-connected computer, and appears
in the same format as on the computers in the Brooklyn Library.
(LIUCAT
contains catalog information for all LIU campuses, and for all books
at the Brooklyn Campus that were published or acquired after 1980.
Journal holdings and video titles may also be found on LIUCAT.
Most of the
Online Databases subscribed
to by LIU Brooklyn Campus Library are available remotely. The
databases are therefore available from your home or office computer.
You must provide your library barcode in order to search
the databases off campus.
Using LIU Materials
or Interlibrary Loans
Materials
may be borrowed from the LIU collection using a valid LIU ID card
to which a library barcode has been affixed. The number represented by the barcode is what
authorizes the transaction. You
may also request materials which are not available at LIU or at
Purchase, through Brooklyn’s Westchester-dedicated
Interlibrary Loan page, or call the Desk at (718) 780-1679.
Interlibrary loan requests may also be made using the electronic
forms available on the library web site. Processing of these requests
is usually done within 24 hours, but it may take several days (or,
in the case of ILL, more than a week) for the material to be delivered
to the Westchester Campus reception desk.
When the requested
book or article arrives, it will be held in your name at the reception desk. Loan periods vary by type of material
and according to the policies of the lending institutions. Check the
due date of everything you borrow and return it to the reception desk
promptly.
The
LIU Reserve Collection & ERes
Books, journal
articles, or other materials placed “on reserve” by LIU faculty are
kept at the Purchase College circulation desk. When requesting this material, please identify
yourself as an LIU student, and provide as much information as possible
about the material that you need.
Some reserve materials are available through Brooklyn’s electronic
reserve system, called ERes. The
web address of ERes is
http://breserves.liu.edu/. Your professor will indicate which materials
are available electronically and can provide passwords for accessing
the material.
The Library at Purchase College
Students,
faculty, and staff of Long Island
University’s Westchester
Campus may use the services and collections of the Purchase College
Library.
The
Library contains approximately 255,000 volumes, plus collections
of microforms, sound recordings, slides, computer files, video recordings
and films. It subscribes to over 1,000 periodicals and around 100
indexing and abstracting services. The Library is also a partial
depository for U.S.
government documents. Most of the Library’s collections are shelved
on open stacks (once you have the call number for an item, you can
go directly to the shelves and retrieve that item yourself).
A
number of printed guides to the Purchase library are available,
as is a self-guided tour. Reference
librarians are available to help you find what you need, and to
give library instruction. Books may be borrowed using a Purchase
College ID card, which has been properly bar-coded in the Library.
