AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

The following requirements apply to all pitched instruments: jazz guitar, vibraphone, double bass, horn players (saxophone, trumpet, trombone), and piano.

  • Major scales and modes, harmonic minor scales, and melodic minor scales in twelve keys and two octaves; chromatic scale full range.
  • Arpeggios: major, minor, augmented, and diminished triads; all in root position, twelve keys, two octaves.
  • Sight-reading skills will be tested on various syncopated rhythms.
  • Ear-training: aural recognition of triads, basic intervals, 7th chords, and rhythms.
  • Three songs from memory including melody and harmony.  Horn players must play the melody, improvise one chorus, and play the melody again; acoustic bass players must play melody, walk one chorus, improvise one chorus, and play the melody again; guitar, piano, and vibraphone players must play the melody, comp one chorus, improvise one chorus, and play the melody again.

The following apply to all vocal applicants. Applicants are asked to bring their own music (in the key sung in) for live auditions. Applicants will be adjudicated based on technique, vocal quality, range, interpretation, articulation, performance style, sense of time and phrasing, and appropriate selections of music. 
      Applicants will be asked to sing the following:

  • Major scales.
  • Arpeggios: major, minor.
  • Sight-reading skills will be tested on various syncopated rhythms.
  • Ear-training: aural recognition of triads, basic intervals, 7th chords, and rhythms.
  • Three songs from memory including lyrics and melody. 

All instrumental and vocal applicants who live outside of the Mid-Atlantic region (New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania), may be submit an audition CD recording that best represent the student’s work.  All material submitted must have clear labels designating the name of the applicant and the selections of music.
