Mission
The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) seeks to advance the study of human communication within a culturally and linguistically diverse society. Individual growth is promoted through the recognition and the expression of multiple theoretical, cultural and individual perspectives. The faculty fosters respect for diversity and a commitment to serve individuals with communication and/or swallowing problems. Students are encouraged to be inquisitive, self-motivated, compassionate, and open minded.
The BS/MS Program
- Accredited by the New York State Education Department and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
- A bilingual/multicultural emphasis program.

- Strong academic and clinical preparation in speech-language pathology.
Benefits
- Earn a B.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders and a M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology in 5 to 6 years.
- At the graduate level, qualify for the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC), New York State licensure in Speech-Language Pathology, New York State Certification as Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities.
- Students demonstrating proficiency in a language other than English may prepare for the Bilingual Extension.

Student Activity
- The Department sponsors lectures and clinical grand rounds.
- Students are active in our chapter of the National Student Speech-Language Hearing Association which serves as a network between students, faculty, and speech-language pathologists in the field.
- Students participate in a variety of academic and social events with other students and faculty.
Who May Apply?
- Entering freshman who have demonstrated exceptional academic performance in high school may be admitted into the program. Students must have a minimum high school average of 88 in a liberal arts and sciences program.
- Current students enrolled in the undergraduate Communication Sciences and Disorders program at LIU may apply to the program once they have completed a minimum of 45 credits. Sixty undergraduate credits must be completed by date of admission with a minimum GPA of 3.2.
- Transfer students who expect to earn an Associate of Arts and Sciences prior to fall entry may apply. Sixty undergraduate credits must be completed by date of admission with a minimum GPA of 3.2
