- B.A. or B.S. degree in any area of study with a minimum GPA of 3.2 and with the completion of pre-requisite coursework in speech-language pathology and audiology: a minimum of 19 credits including: Phonetics, Anatomy and Physiology, Introduction to Communication Disorders Across the Life Span, Speech Science I, Language Acquisition, Audiology AND:
- Three letters of recommendation (two academic)
- Completion of a personal interview
- Passing an oral and written language screening in English
- Minimum grade of a B- and Grade Point Average of 3.0
- Course credits will be granted for designated courses completed within 5 years.

Yes. A Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology can be completed on a part-time basis. However, once clinical practica courses begin, students may be required to spend 3-5 days per week at their designated sites.
Weekend classes are not offered in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. Classes are offered during mornings, afternoons, and evenings, Monday through Thursday and occasionally Friday mornings.
Research Option
The research option requires a student to conduct empirical research on a topic relevant to communication sciences and disorders or dysphagia. Selection of the research option implies that completion of the requirements here listed is in lieu of the comprehensive examination.
Monolingual/Bilingual Track
There are two tracks of study: Monolingual and Bilingual. Students demonstrating proficiency in a language other than English may further prepare for a certificate in Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities with a Bilingual Extension. Both options are subject to the rules of the Departmental Graduate Program Committee.
All students are eligible for graduation upon satisfactory completion of their coursework and a minimum of 400 hours of clinical practicum. Students who select the Research Option must successfully complete their research project. All other students are required to pass the Comprehensive Examination.
Candidates for the Master of Science degree with a Bilingual Specialization must have completed a minimum of 64 credits. They must also pass the Bilingual Education Assessment (BEA) in their selected language(s) prior to taking SLP 610A. Students preparing for the certification in Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities with a Bilingual Extension must perform supervised assessment and intervention with culturally and linguistically diverse individuals in school settings.
The Clinical Administration is dedicated to finding clinical practica sites for students. We have affiliations with a wide range of programs in the Greater New York area. A majority of our students obtain their first clinical experience onsite at the Downtown Brooklyn Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic.
Matriculated graduate students are allowed to transfer up to six credits from another university upon approval of the faculty at LIU. Transfer credit will be considered for courses taken at other universities prior to admission to LIU and within the last five years. No transfer credits will be given for foundation courses.
