Communication Sciences & Disorders

  • Academic Program

In order to be admitted to the graduate program in Speech-Language Pathology, students must take undergraduate coursework in the academic discipline of Communication Sciences and Disorders. Specifically, students must have the following courses as their equivalents:

SLP 104 Phonetics
SLP 113 Anatomy and Physiology Bases for Speech & Language I
SLP 133 Speech Science I
SLP 231 Language Acquisition Across Life Span I: Early Years
SLP 321 Audiology I – Hearing Science
SLP 410 or 411 Introduction to Communication Disorders Across Life Span

Post Baccalaureate students must complete a minimum of four undergraduate prerequisite courses prior to take graduate level courses. The other two prerequisite courses should be completed at the beginning of their graduate studies. Although admitted to the program, students must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in their prerequisite coursework to matriculate fully and continue into the graduate program.   

Permission

  • All Speech Pathology courses require department permission.  Students are given permission on a first come basis.

Registration

  • Registration takes place several weeks before the beginning of the following semester.  Students must contact the department to find out about registration for the subsequent semester. There is no specific date for registration.
  • Once registration has begun students should come to the department and fill out the necessary forms.
  • Students who obtain departmental permission for a course must then register for that course with the Long Island University-Brooklyn Campus Office of the Registrar in person.

  • Students who do not obtain permission go on to a waiting list. Students can try to get an over-tally on the first day of class. Over-tallies are at the faculty’s discretion.

Course Offerings

  • All Speech Pathology course are offered during Fall and Spring semesters. Summer offerings are tentative.
  • The majority of courses are held during the day with occasional evenings.
  • One section of a course is usually offered every semester.
  • Please note: Students who are applying as a post baccalaureate student, you must contact the Office of Admissions and request the appropriate application from them.
