Testing Center
- Under the Ability-to-Benefit Act of the United States Department of Education, an examination of academic preparedness is required for students in the College Entry Plan who wish to apply for financial aid. The Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University administers the ASSET examination to fulfill this requirement. HEOP students entering without a high school diploma are also required to pass the ASSET examination.
- The ASSET is a multiple-choice examination. There are three sections: Writing Skills (25 minutes--36 questions), Reading Skills (25 minutes--24 questions), and Numerical Skills (25 minutes--32 questions).
- The ASSET is given by appointment only.
- If you are a CEP student and if you are eligible for the ASSET, the director, Mr. Nick Macdonald, will call you to schedule the exam.
- If you are a HEOP student and your advisor has notified you that you need to take the ASSET, please call the Testing Center at (718) 488-1019 for an appointment.
- Please bring photo ID and 2 sharpened pencils to the examination. Calculators are not permitted. Because this is a timed examination, latecomers are not admitted.
- Results of the examination will be available three business days after the examination.
- If you are a CEP student, the CEP director will contact you with your results.
- If you are a HEOP student, you may call your advisor for your results.
- Or, both CEP and HEOP students may call the Testing Center.
- You may prepare for the exam by using a basic GED (General Equivalency Diploma) review book available in any bookstore or library. You should focus on writing (grammar and usage), reading in any of the fields included in the GED book, and mathematics.
- A sample ASSET exam and test-taking tips are available through the Internet. Go to
http://www.act.org/asset/tests/index.html. Scroll down and click on ASSET, then click on “Download ASSET student guide.”
- When you prepare using the on-line sample and tips, remember: You will not be taking the entire ASSET exam. To fulfill the Ability-to-Benefit requirement, you will take only the Writing, Reading, and Numerical portions. A calculator is not permitted for the numerical section. For special select summer programs, you may be asked to take the Reading portion only.
