M.S. in Nursing for Nurse Practitioners
and Advanced Certificate Program
The
Adult Family and Geriatric Nurse Practitioner Programs are designed
to prepare advanced practice Nurses in primary care roles.
The Master of Science degree will be awarded to
candidates who complete degree requirements and have demonstrated
that they have: 1) the developed refined analytical skills, 2) the
ability to articulate viewpoints and positions, 3) the ability to
connect theory to practice, and 4) the advanced practice skills
to provide primary care to adults, families and the elderly.
The Post Master's Certificate program is available
to nurses who have an earned master's degree in nursing and are
seeking clinical expertise in the expertise in the nurse practitioner
role.
The program is approved by the New York State Education
Department and fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate
Nursing Education (CCNE).
An accelerated B.S./M.S. degree
is offered for RNs who hold non-Nursing or Associate degrees.
The primary focus of both the Master of Science
degree and the Post Master's Certificate program for advanced nurse
practitioners is expertise in the clinical role. The course of study
for both has been developed with that goal in mind.
1. The mission of the Long Island University School
of Nursing advanced practice graduate programs is to:
- Provide the opportunity for quality graduate
advanced practice nursing education for baccalaureate prepared
registered nurses from diverse, multi-cultural backgrounds.
- Assist students in acquiring the critical thinking
and problem-solving skills necessary to adapt to an ever changing
professional environment
- Provide opportunity for students to practice
successfully in the political, social, and economic environment
which currently affects the quality and availability of health
care to clients, particularly those in the inner city.
- Provide competent advanced practitioners to inner
city, multi-cultural client populations.
- Provide students with the advocacy skills necessary
to empower clients to improve the quality and availability of
their health care.
- Assist students to share cultural insights to
enrich their personal and professional lives.
- Instill a love of and respect for life-long learning
2. The graduate of the Master of Science program
will be prepared to demonstrate mastery of the following objectives:
- Synthesize knowledge from advanced theoretical
and empirical sciences to generate nursing theory relevant to
the advance practice nursing role.
- Evaluate clinical data for planning, implementing
and evaluating of health care to promote, maintain and/or restore
an optimum level of health and adaptation in adult clients.
- Utilize the research process in the systematic
investigation of factors that influence the health and adaptation
of adult client populations.
- Assume a collegial role on consultation with
other health care providers to enhance the quality and accessibility
of health care services to consumers.
- Utilize the advance practice role to exercise
leadership responsibility, professional accountability and a scholarly
approach to health care.
- Generate a personal philosophy and role definition
that reflects a commitment to human values and contributes to
the evolution of nursing as a profession.
- Utilize oral and written skills to actualize
the advanced practice nursing role.
3. Terminal Objectives of the Nurse Practitioner
Programs
In addition to the objectives listed above for Master's
level study, the Adult Nurse Practitioner graduate will demonstrate
mastery of the following objectives:
- Use a wide range of theory and research from
nursing, medicine and the social and physical sciences in formulating
health care management plans for individuals.
- Assess, diagnose, monitor, coordinate and manage
the health care of selected clients of all ages in both primary
and acute care settings.
- Perform and interpret physical examinations and
laboratory tests in both the primary and acute care setting.
- Select and recommend appropriate diagnostic and
therapeutic interventions and regimes with attention to safety
and cost in keeping with collaborative protocols.
- Select and prescribe appropriate drug therapy
for common acute and chronic adult disorders in keeping with collaborative
protocols.
- Prepare and submit practice protocols in order
to meet the certification requirement of the New York State Education
Department.
- Articulate the role of the nurse practitioner
as a collaborative member of the health care team.
Program Requirements

Students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 in order to
remain in the program. All M.S. candidates must successfully complete
the courses in Physical Assessment, Primary Care, Pharmacology,
Pathophysiology, and Advanced Practice Role before proceeding to
the first preceptored practicum. (Post-Master's Certificate candidates
may receive advanced standing through challenge exams.) Co-requisite
with Preceptored Practicums are courses in Diagnosis and Management
of Illnesses.
Any student receiving a failing grade in a preceptored
practicum will not be permitted to continue in the Nurse Pracititioner
Programs.
Health Clearance/Clinical Requirements
Before a student starts the practicum experience the following documentation
must be on file with the Clinical Coordinator:
1. A history and physical, on a Long Island University
health form, including:
- PPD, if positive, a chest x-ray
- Titers for measles, mumps, rubella, and chicken
pox
- Hepatitis B immunization, series of 3 injections
- Urine toxicology
2. Current New York State license to practice as
a registered professional nurse.
3. Malpractice insurance for a nurse practitioner
student. Coverage should be no less than $1,000,000 per claim and
$3,000,000 aggregate.
4. Current basic cardiac life support certificate.
5. Verification that the mandatory fire, safety,
and infection control requirements have been met within the past
year.
6. If a student is pregnant she must have written
permission from her health care provider to practice where there
are infectious diseases.
If a specific practicum site has additional requirements
the students assigned to that site will be responsible for submitting
the appropriate documentation in a timely manner.
It is the student's responsibility to maintain malpractice
coverage throughout the practicum experience. An updated statement
of coverage must be submitted to the Clinical Coordinator if the
original certificate of insurance expires at anytime during the
practicum. Students must also submit new health clearance forms
if their practicum experience has not been completed within 12 months
of their last physical examination.
Students cannot participate in any clinical practicum
experience until all documentation has been filed with the Clinical
Coordinator and, if necessary, forwarded to the clinical site administrator.

Acceptance into the Graduate Nursing programs has
the following criteria:
- B.S. degree from an NLN or CCNE accredited School
of Nursing with a 3.0 GPA in the nursing major and 2.5 overall
GPA. Registered nurses with non-nursing baccalaureate degrees
may be able to qualify for entrance to the graduate program by
validation of knowledge through required tests.
- New York State RN License
- Two years recent clinical experience or equivalent
- Three professional references
- Personal interview
- Students in the MS/ANP (Adult Nurse Pracititioner)
program must have undergraduate research, statistics and health-assessment
courses (or certificate) as prerequisites. These prerequisites
may be completed during first year of graduate work.
For the Post-Master's NP Certificate Programs, the
criteria are
- M.S. from a CCNE-accredited or an NLNAC-accredited
School of Nursing with a 3.0 GPA
- New York State RN License
- Two years recent clinical experience or equivalent
- Three professional references
- Personal interview
Advisement and Counseling
Each student will be assigned a graduate nursing faculty adviser
to provide academic guidance for the duration of the program.
Degree Requirements

The applicants for the M.S. degree program for Adult
or Geriatric Nurse Practitioners must complete a 41-credit course
of study. Requirements may be completed on a full- or part-time
basis.
The applicant for the MS Degree Program for Family
Nurse Practitioners must complete a 49 credit course of study. Both
full and part time matriculation is available.
The applicant to the Post-Master's certificate program
must complete a 35 credit course of stud for ANP or GNP certification
as a Nurse Practitioner. For the FNP Post-Master's certification,
a 41 credit course of study is required.
Both the MS and Certificate Programs have supervised
clinical practicums. ANP and GNP students must complete 600 hours
of practicum; FNP students are required to complete 900 hours of
clinical experience.
