Our
program, leading to a Bachelor of Science with a major in Nursing,
is fully accredited by the New York State Education Department and
accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The
Program is designed to prepare the student to develop the competencies
essential for beginning professional nursing practice, sit for the
state licensure examination for registered nurses and to build a
foundation for graduate study. Upon completion of the program the
graduate will be able to:
- Provide culturally competent ethical nursing care aimed at promoting and maintaining health in individuals across the lifespan with a variety of spiritual, physical, and psychological needs.
- Pursue knowledge and integrate current technological resources and research for the improvement of health care.
- Assume a leadership role in planning, managing and monitoring health care to improve client outcomes in a variety of structured and unstructured settings.
- Collaborate with other health care professionals in the development and evaluation of traditional and complementary care delivery systems.
- Practice within the caring framework and legal parameters of the nursing profession.
- Acknowledge pluralism, ethnic and cultural diversity as essential values and communicate these values throughout the healthcare community.
- Advocate for equitable health care for all.
Program Requirements (top of page)
Students are admitted on a rolling basis and all required courses are offered each semester, except for the part-time weekend/evening program. The program is planned to be completed in four academic years. If a student requires proficiency and skills courses, however, the course of study may be lengthened. All full-time students are expected to complete the courses in the Nursing sequence within four years. A part-time program of study is also available and these students are expected to complete the program in eight years.
For acceptance as a nursing major:
- High school students must have an 85 high school average over four years of work
- Transfer students must have a 2.75 cumulative grade point average for all work done at other colleges and a 2.75 cumulative average for all pre-requisite sciences courses (as delineated in the nursing program description in the undergraduate bulletin)
- Transfer students with less than 24 college credits must meet both transfer and freshman requirements
Students who do not meet these requirements may be accepted as pre-nursing (PNU) majors. After two semesters of full-time college work, students designated as PNU majors may have their status changed to NUR.
Upon acceptance to the nursing major, freshman students (and transfer students whose English and math courses have not been accepted by the University) take a placement exam to assess skills in reading, English and Math. Exam results are used to program the student's first courses at LIU.
Transfer students receive a transfer evaluation of their previous college courses by the Office of Admissions and receive transfer credit for courses with grade "C" or better representing equivalent preparation to courses at LIU.
Upon acceptance as a nursing major, both freshman and transfer students are advised and registered by the academic advisors in the School of Nursing .
Because we are interested in student success, we require that before beginning the professional phase of the program, students satisfy all proficiency requirements, complete all prerequisite courses, achieve a minimum average score of 70 on the HESI A2 Vocabulary, Grammar, Reading Comprehension, and Math sections, and have a minimum overall grade-point average of 2.5 and a minimum overall average of 2.5 in science courses.
Prior to entry into the first clinical Nursing course, students are responsible for fulfilling clinical clearance. Clinical clearance means that you have completed and submitted the following:
- Health form with all required information such as titers value, PPD , or results of chest X-ray, urine analysis, hepatitis status or declination.
- Results of drug screening
- Results of criminal background check
- Current CPR
- Evidence/documentation of medical insurance coverage
- Attended orientation
- Completed OSHA mandatories
- Possible fit testing with payment
The Director of Academic Advisement can provide further information.
Students already enrolled at the Brooklyn Campus who wish to enter the Nursing program must submit a Request for a Change of Major at least one semester prior to the semester they wish to enter Nursing.
Continued enrollment in Nursing courses is contingent upon the following:
- Maintaining at least a 2.5 overall average
- Maintaining a minimum Nursing grade-point average of 2.5
- Earning a grade of C+ or better in each Nursing course
- Repeating no more than one Nursing course
- Earning a B or better in any repeated Nursing course
- Completing all corequisite courses
- Fulfilling all clinical clearance requirements prior to the beginning of each clinical Nursing course
- Attending a mandatory hospital-orientation program each semester
- Demonstrating competency in drug-dosage calculation during specified semesters
- Demonstrating competency in the clinical laboratory courses
- Passing both lecture and clinical portions of courses with a laboratory section
- Participating in the Community Service Project (for a total 100 hours)
Admission to Degree Program (top of page)
Nursing courses taken in baccalaureate programs at other institutions are reviewed by the Dean or a designee. Appropriate academic credit is then assigned.
Grades of C or better are required for all transfer credit. A minimum grade-point average of 2.75 is required for admission of transfer students into the Nursing Program. Transfer students who request admission into the Nursing major must satisfactorily complete the HESI A2 Test as well as the University's placement examinations in mathematics and English.
All students taking a Nursing course with a laboratory component are required to have annual clinical clearance. All completed documentation must be submitted to the Clinical Resource Instructor in the School of Nursing by August 1 for the fall semester and December 1 for the spring semester. It is the responsibility of students to obtain specific laboratory tests (nose and throat cultures, serological immunizations, etc.) at their own expense. Students are strongly advised to be vaccinated against hepatitis B. Failure to submit these reports within the specific time limit automatically denies admittance of students to Nursing courses with clinical components. In compliance with the U.S. Public Health Service requirements, it is recommended that pregnant students not enroll in the Microbiology or Human Anatomy courses or engage in clinical practice where there are clients with infectious diseases unless first receiving written permission from their health care providers.
A laboratory fee is charged for Nursing courses with a clinical component. Furthermore, students in all clinical/laboratory courses are required to purchase, at their own expense, the uniforms and/or other equipment appropriate to or required by the agency to which they are assigned.
Students must fulfill all nonacademic requirements (tuition, fees, library obligations, etc.). See University Bulletin.
As the Nursing curriculum is designed to reflect current trends in health-care legislation and changes in the delivery of health care and nursing trends, the Nursing faculty reserves the right to make reasonable curriculum and policy changes without prior notice to the student body. When possible, students will be notified in advance.
