in Nursing: Executive Program for Nursing and HealthCare Management

The Executive Program for Nursing and Health Care
Management provides advanced nursing content and understanding
of complex nursing issues through courses taught by both Nursing
and Business faculty. It prepares nurses for leadership positions
in hospitals, nursing homes, community health centers, HMO's,
home care agencies, consulting firms and entrepreneurial ventures.
The program is approved by the New York State
Education Department and fully accredited by the Commission on
Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
The mission of the Long Island University School
of Nursing advanced practice graduate programs is to:

- Provide the opportunity for quality
graduate advanced practice nursing education for baccalaureate
prepared registered nurses from diverse, multi-cultural
backgrounds.
- Assist students in acquiring the critical
thinking and problem-solving skills necessary to adapt
to an ever changing professional environment.
- Provide opportunity for students to practice
successfully in the political, social, and economic environment
which currently affects the quality and availability of
health care to clients, particularly those in the inner
city.
- Provide competent advanced practitioners
to inner city, multi-cultural client populations.
- Provide students with the advocacy skills
necessary to empower clients to improve the quality and
availability of their health care.
- Assist students to share cultural insights
to enrich their personal and professional lives.
- Instill a love of and respect for life-long
learning.

Terminal Objectives of the Master's Degree Program
The graduate of the Master of Science Executive
Program for Nursing and Health Care Management will be prepared
to demonstrate mastery of the following objectives:
- Organize the Nursing Department to develop
vision and mission in concert with the hospital's, delineate
authority, functional responsibilities, lines of relationships
and communication.
- Develop, implement and evaluate standards of
patient care and standards of nursing practice which ensure
safety and therapeutically effective nursing care of patients.
- Control and evaluate the allocated budget to
meet staffing and nursing needs of patient care.
- Make sound decisions based on analytical skills,
problem solving techniques, and use of resources, information
and communication technology.
- Collaborate with the administrative staff,
other department personnel and representatives of allied groups
in planning for coordinated services to patients.
- Manage change effectively.
- Communicate QI (Quality Improvement) findings
and recommendations to the nursing staff, hospital wide QI committee,
and to the Governing Body of the Instituion.
Program Requirements (top

Students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 in order to remain
in the program. All M.S. candidates must successfully complete two
semesters of internship in Nursing and Health Care Management. Any
student receiving a failing grade in the internship will not be
permitted to continue the program. Each candidate in the Nurse Executive
program must complete a master's project in association with the
internship experience.

The applicants for the M.S. degree program for Nurse
Executives must complete a 43-credit course of study: 25 core credits
and 20 specialty credits. Requirements may be completed on a full-
or part-time basis.
