Orientation Leader Position

We are currently looking for eight dynamic Long Island University, Brooklyn students to serve as Orientation Leaders during Summer, 2008.  Orientation Leaders support the Orientation Coordinator in organizing and conducting New Student Orientation days.  This is a paid position.  Orientation Leaders receive $12.00 an hour and work fifteen hours per week (schedules may vary).  This is a temporary position and runs from June 2nd, 2008 until September 3rd, 2008.

Orientation leaders must possess outgoing personalities and demonstrate a dedication to student success and professional development.  We are looking for energetic students with a desire to give back to the LIU community through creative contributions.  This is a great opportunity to strengthen your resume and become an integral part of the Academic & Instructional Resources team.

Orientation Leader Responsibilities Include:

  • Developing and conducting ice-breakers during New Student Orientation.
  • Providing examples of student leadership during New Student Orientation.
  • Serving as guides to students and parents during New Student Orientation, including answering questions about student activities and college life.
  • Assisting with the administrative coordination of New Student Orientation.
  • Contributing creatively to the design and personality of New Student Orientation.
  • Conducting campus tours during New Student Orientation.
  • Performing basic clerical duties including answering phone, filing, photocopying, assembling mailings, and data entry.

The application process for the Orientation Leaders includes an application form, a 1-2 page personal letter, one recommendation from a faculty or administrator on campus, and two interviews conducted by the Orientation Planning Committee and the First Year Programs Coordinator.

Student Mentor Requirements

  • A minimum 2.5 GPA
  • A minimum of 24 credits earned
  • You must be registered as a fulltime student for fall, 2008 by June 1st.
  • You must be available to work one of the following schedules:
    • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday (9:00am – 1:00pm)
    • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday (1:00pm 5:00pm)
  • You must work 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. during all Orientation days.  The dates are July 29, August, 5, August 12, August 19, August 26, and September 2.  There will be no exceptions.

Great communication skills and a positive attitude are also a must!
