10 Things Every College Student Can Do

For A Successful College Experience

1)   Establish a study schedule.
Set aside at least a couple of hours or more each day for homework. Getting into a routine will help you meet academic challenges and make effective use of your time.

2)   Experiment with a variety of classes.
Don’t be afraid to take a class in a subject that is new to you. College is an opportunity to expand your knowledge and interests.

3)   Understand your degree requirements.
Learn about the necessary university requirements and develop a graduation plan even if you have not yet declared a major. You can even register for classes online!

4)   Meet with an advisor.
It’s always a good idea to meet with an academic advisor at least once a semester. Your advisor can help you choose a major, create a plan to complete your degree requirements, and support your academic goals.

5)   Meet your professors.
Visit your professors during office hours. You’re likely to learn something about them and gain new information on the subjects you are studying.

6)      Find out what student activities Long Island University has to offer.
Whether you like to pass your time playing sports, taking photographs, singing, dancing, or creating art, chances are the Brooklyn Campus has a student club for your interests.

7)   Get to know the resources available to students.
Become well acquainted with our gym, library, computer facilities, and other resources available to students. Make sure to visit www.liu.edu to sign up for e-mail and access your university records through the Student Information System.

8)      Learn about financial aid opportunities.
Financial aid is an ongoing process so you’ll need to know what forms to fill out, what scholarships you are eligible for, when the application deadlines are, and when financial aid checks are disbursed.

9)      Explore internship opportunities.
If you feel your academic schedule can handle it, an internship in your field can give you valuable experience and help you secure a job upon graduation.

    10)   Start planning for life after college.
What do you want to get out of college? What do you want to do once you graduate? How will you achieve those goals? Thinking about those questions now and talking to your academic advisor will help you get the most out of your college experience.
