Managing Drug Therapy in HIV Positive Patients
A knowledge-based activity.

LAGUARDIA MARRIOTT HOTEL

PURPOSE:
The advent of potent antiretroviral therapy has resulted in dramatic reductions in AIDS-related morbidity and mortality in the developed world for patients with access to these medications. As a result, mortality from AIDS in the United States has declined approximately 70% since its peak in 1995. Despite these impressive successes, significant problems remain; these include side-effects, drug-interactions, HIV medications errors and taking care of HIV (+) patients with co-morbidities. This continuing education seminar, which co-sponsored with SUNY Downstate Medical Center, will provide an update for the pharmacist on these topics.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the completion of this program, the participant will be able to: 1. Describe current expert consensus guidelines on when to initiate antiretroviral therapy; 2. Discuss the optimization of treatment regimens for both treatmentnaive and treatment-experienced patients; 3. List clinically relevant side-effects of antiretroviral therapy; 4. Explain the management of hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus co-infection in patients with HIV infection; 5. Identify HIV medication errors and how to prevent them.

Continuing Education Credits The College has assigned 5 hours (0.5 ACUs) for attendance and completion of the program evaluation at this seminar. Statements of continuing pharmacy education credit will be mailed within six weeks of the program.
