Lawful Prescribing & Dispensing of Controlled Substances in New York and
Diversion Prevention

PURPOSE:
Pharmacists are faced with ever changing regulations promulgated by state and fderal
authorities. This seminar will address the many issues dealing with the proper
prescribing and dispensing of controlled substances in New York. In addition, drug
diversion has reached unprecedented levels in our country and the second part of
this seminar will offer strategies to understand and deal with this problem.
OBJECTIVES:
At the completion of this program, the participant will be able to: 1. Describe the
requirements for the dispensing of prescription controlled substances; 2. Discuss
the responsibilities of prescribers and pharmacists to assure that a controlled substance
prescription has been issued for a legitimate medical purpose and in the
usual course of professional practice; 3. Describe the requirements for properly dispensing
controlled substances; 4. Discuss the various record keeping requirements
in NY State for dispensing controlled substances; 5. Understand the national
overview of prescription drug abuse, crimes and victims; 6. Describe barriers to the
ability of law enforcement personnel to coordinate investigations of pharmacy
crime in overlapping jurisdictions.
Continuing Education Credits The College has assigned 5 hours (0.5
ACUs) for attendance and completion of the program evaluation at this seminar.
