INSTRUCTIONS TO THE APPLICANT FOR THE
LONG ISLAND UNIVERSITY
PH. D. PROGRAM IN CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY
ALL MATERIALS SHOULD BE SENT TO THE GRADUATE ADMISSIONS OFFICE WITH THE FOLLOWING NOTATION ON THE FRONT LEFT PORTION OF THE ENVELOPE: ATTENTION: Ph.D. PSYCHOLOGY
All application materials must be received by the Office of Graduate Admissions no
later than FEBRUARY 1 although applicants should make every effort to complete their applications by JANUARY 15 when we will begin to review applications.
***Please read the following instructions carefully. If there is a discrepancy between them and the instructions printed in the application form, these specific Ph.D. Program instructions take precedence.
A. COMPLETED APPLICATION MUST INCLUDE:
- Two copies of the completed application form should be submitted together with a non-refundable $30.00 application fee. Checks should be made payable to Long Island University. Cash will not be accepted.
- Two copies of official transcripts from each undergraduate and graduate institution attended should be sent directly to the Graduate Admissions Office.
- Two copies of official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (Verbal, Quantitative, and Advanced in Psychology) should be sent directly to the Graduate Admissions Office. Please note the Advanced GRE scores in Psychology are required of all applicants.
- International students whose native language is not English should have official scores of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TEOFL) sent by the Educational Testing Service to the Graduate Admissions Office.
- Three letters of recommendation, two of which must be from psychology professors, should be sent directly to the Graduate Admissions Office.
- A separate list should be made of all employment including volunteer work which you have had over the last two years. This should be in reverse chronological order, beginning with the most recent placement. Indicate the place of employment, the nature of the work, the dates, and how many hours per week it involved. A current curriculum vitae can be substituted, if preferred. Please submit two copies of this summary.
- A separate list should be made of all undergraduate and graduate psychology courses taken, indicating where the course was taken, the grade received for the course, and the semester and year it was completed. On this same page, list scores received on the GRE and the dates the exams were taken. Please submit two copies of this list.
- On a separate page, a personal statement should discuss the development of your interest in clinical psychology, relevant experience, and your professional goals. The personal statement should also reflect the personal qualities that the applicant believes will make them a good clinical psychologist. Please submit two copies of this statement with your application.
B. FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION
Students should apply for financial aid at the time of their application for admission to the program. Applicants should fill out the FAFSA form on line at FAFSA.gov and send the form to Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus. The school’s code number is 002751
C. MINIMUM CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION
Please see the Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus Graduate Bulletin and the enclosed booklet, “Information for Prospective Students,” for a description of the Ph.D. Program in Clinical Psychology.
The minimum criteria for admission include:
- combined verbal and quantitative GRE scores of 1100;
- an undergraduate GPA of 3.2;
- a psychology GPA of 3.4;
- a minimum score of 550 on the psychology GRE; and
- 15 credits in psychology, with statistics and experimental psychology required.
D. SCREENING OF APPLICANTS
Initial screening of applicants will be based on the formal material submitted by each candidate. Those applicants who pass this initial screening will then be invited for an interview with the faculty and will have the opportunity to meet and be interviewed by advanced students in the Ph.D. program. The personal interview is structured to maximize the opportunity for communication between the applicant and the departmental admission committee members. Following this interview, the final evaluation by the admissions committee will be accomplished as expeditiously as possible, and all candidates will be notified of their status by April 1.
The applications of those students to whom we are unable to offer a place in the
Ph.D. program may be eligible for the M.A. program in Psychology. We will automatically forward these applications to the M.A. program for review.
