Location. The Master of Public Administration Program of the School of Business, Public Administration and Information Sciences (SBPAIS) at Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus [Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA)] in cooperation with the New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS), offers courses leading to the Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree at DCAS’s citywide training center, 2 Washington Street, across from Battery Park. Courses offered at DCAS on Wednesdays are available at Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) at 130 Livingston Street in downtown Brooklyn by video conferencing technology (based on needs, i.e. an enrollment of eight (8+) students or more at 130 Livingston Street). Note: Only students who work for the MTA are permitted to take courses at this location. Saturday courses are offered at the DCAS site only.
Description. The MPA degree consists of 48 credits hours in 16 three-credit courses. The curriculum includes five management foundation courses, four functions and responsibility courses, four specialization courses and two capstone courses. Thirteen courses (39 credits) are available through DCAS. Students take Computer Applications, Capstone Seminar and Capstone Project courses at the LIU Brooklyn Campus (on Flatbush Avenue at DeKalb, across from Junior’s restaurant) to fulfill state residency requirements. The DCAS curriculum, with current academic year dates, is provided.
Schedule. MPA courses at DCAS meet in eight week “fast track” modules, Wednesdays from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. or Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Course sequence allows students to progress without interruption once they begin. The MPA degree is attainable in two years attending both Wednesdays and Saturdays or two and one-half years at the pace of one course per week. In-person registration may be completed in advance at the Brooklyn Campus; registration cards may also be faxed to the graduate advisor.
Tuition and Texts. Courses at DCAS are offered at one-third off the Brooklyn Campus graduate tuition rate. The AY2008-09 graduate tuition is $882.00 per credit. The discounted per credit rate for AY2008-09 is $588.00 billed at $1,764.00 per three-credit course. A required $30 diner’s fee is added for those taking nine or more credits per semester at the Brooklyn Campus. Tuition is billed by mail after registration and can be paid by check or credit card. Payment plans and loans are available through the Financial Aid Office. Please call (718) 488-1037 for financial aid information and applications. Textbooks are available from the LIU Brooklyn Campus bookstore. Textbooks range in price from $60 to $150 per course.
Admission. Students must be admitted to Long Island University and the MPA Program to attend LIU classes at DCAS. Graduate admission forms are available from the LIU Admissions Office (718-488-1011). Admission requires proof (official transcript) of undergraduate degree from an accredited institution, two letters of recommendation and a $30 application fee. The $30.00 application fee is waived for candidates applying on-line. GRE or GMAT scores are not required Limited matriculation may be available with permission of the director for GPAs of under 2.5. Limited becomes full matriculation with “B” or better grades in the first 12 credits. Graduation requires a 3.0 (“B”) average.
