M.P.A. in Public Administration or Health Administration

If you are employed in a public service or healthcare organization or are considering a career in the field, the NASPAA-accredited Master of Public Administration Program at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus may be the right program for you. The MPA degree prepares public service professionals for managerial positions in government, health and not-for-profit sectors.

The National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA) is a membership organization of public administration, public policy, and public affairs programs that share ideals of public service and excellence in educational programs for public service.  Accreditation of graduate programs is carried out by NASPAA’s Commission on Peer Review and Accreditation. The MPA Program’s current accreditation renewal date is 2009.

The LIU MPA program is open to students from all undergraduate fields. We provide both the foundations and advanced applications expected in a graduate program.

We focus on competencies that employers want – leadership, ethical decision-making, analytical and budgeting expertise, written communication and oral presentation skills. Specialization courses in government, health and not-for-profit fields with a variety of sub-topics provide depth in the student’s area of interest. Focused capstone courses allow students to apply their new competencies in meaningful public service projects.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the M.P.A. program is open to graduates from accredited undergraduate institutions who have maintained a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Two letters of recommendation and a current resume are required. GRE score are recommended. Limited matriculation may be available to those with less than a 3.0 GPA with permission of the Director. Upon completion of 12 graduate credits with a B average or better, the limited matriculant will become a full matriculant. Transfer students are welcome; transfer credits will be evaluated by the program director.

Degree Requirements

The program is designed for the working adult who wishes to pursue a graduate degree part-time by taking evening and some weekend courses. The M.P.A. degree consists of 48 credits separated into four parts. An introductory sequence provides 18 credits of public service contents, technology, and analytical skills. This is followed by 12 credits of management topics: human resources, budgeting and financial management, law and accountability. Students take 12 credits in an area of specialization and a required six-credit capstone experience culminating in a team project. Students may petition for up to 12 transfer credits from another master's degree or for electives in lieu of required courses in which competence can be demonstrated.

Specialization topics (12 credits):

All PAD and NPM students must take PM 728 + 3 additional courses (see specialization schedule)

All HAD students must take PM 730 + 3 additional courses (see specialization schedule)



Capstone Courses (6 credits):

All M.P.A. students take these courses : Capstone courses should be taken during the last 12 credits of academic work. In no case may they be taken before foundation courses are completed. Students prepare project proposals in MPA 798 and complete the project or examination in MPA 799.
