The Testing Center can help you reach your goals! We provide placement, exemption, and mastery examinations to support the process of learning and growing that is at the heart of our University. For the Summer Institute, we offer three exams:

The Brooklyn Campus Placement Examination.

You have already taken this exam once. An important benefit of the Summer Institute is that at the end of the Institute you can take the Placement Examination again. About 50% of the Summer Institute students usually advance at least one level as a result. And if you remain in the same level of English, you still win--because you will enter your class with much stronger skills.

The Placement Exam will be given

The ASSET exam

This is a multiple-choice reading exam which takes 25 minutes. You will take it in class on the 2nd day of the English Summer Institute and the results will help your instructor know how much to emphasize reading comprehension.

You will take the ASSET in class again on the last day of the Institute. The results of this second ASSET test will help us evaluate our program—and may be used in conjunction with your Placement Exam at the end of the Institute to help determine your final English placement.

The Computer Skills Evaluation Exam (CSEE)

In order to graduate, you must demonstrate basic computer skills in Word, Windows, and Internet/email.  You can meet this requirement in a number of ways: By  passing  designated courses (CS 9, CS 9A, and CS 9H) with a C+ or higher; by passing the Computer Skills Evaluation Exam (CSEE) instead of taking courses; or by a combination of designated courses and exams.

A special feature of the English Summer Institute is that you can get a head start on your computer skills. Click here to access a practice CSEE  from any computer on campus.  This is an interactive sample—it's fun to do and will give you a good idea of what the actual exam is like.  Also, you can view additional sample questions by clicking here.

Or, you can go to a free walk-in lab where a tutor can assist you with the sample exam and answer any questions you may have. For the summer, the walk-in labs are on Mondays from 3:00- 5:00 pm and Saturdays from 12.30 - 2:00 pm, both in LLC 405 through August 27th. The walk-in labs are on a first-come, first-served basis-there are approximately 18 computers available at any one time.

When you are ready to take the actual exam, just walk in to one of our scheduled exam sessions-no appointment needed. Exams are given Mondays at 1:30 pm and Saturdays at 10:00 am, both in LLC 405 through August 27th.>Photo ID is required. Passing the exam will put you an important step closer to graduation!
